How slow is too slow?
« on: November 24, 2008, 01:42:41 AM »
...league play.

I realize that league bowling is not only fun and competitive but also a social gathering of friends.

Last was ri-goddam-diculous.  We bowled the slowest team.  They have been dubbed the slowest team by the entire league because routinely, they finish at least an hour after the entire league is already finished and out the door.

Each player is damn near the same which is why I guess they all bowl together....

Has anyone experienced this?  I'm sure every league has that slow team but to finish an hour after everyone else.....

If you want to hang out with your team all night, that's fine.  You can still hang out AFTER you're done with league bowling.  The rest of us have to go to bed so we can work the next morning...

I have no problem waiting a moment or two between bowlers, you don't have to be going as fast as possible.  However, you HAVE to be courteous to the other people who might actually not want to be there until 10pm.  Unfortunately, every league has a team or two like that...

How many times do you hear this in a league......"you're up"?

I sorta blame automatic scoring as back in the day we always followed a bowler and people seemed to pay more attention rather than look at scoring arrows.

Probably also part of society's ME generation....it's ALL about ME!

Here's what they do.

1.  Bowl
2.  Run to the bar
3.  Chat with friends
4.  Disappear
5.  Return to the lane

It makes for a very long and frustrating night.

I'd just be sick next time we had to bowl that team. I've been there, done that.  I just quit the league.

We just bowled them last week..ugh.

Smokers, drinkers and BS'ers. If we try to tell them to please hury, they just slow down even more. I'm not going to quit because I cmmitted to this season with them. Next year, different story.

Can't complain to the league president, she on that team..

Like JLS sez..we're screwed

We have a league rule concerning two problems we had in the past. Since we have a smoking ban in Florida, all smoke breaks take place between games and it lasts no longer than 15 minutes. The second part of the rule states if your name comes up and you are not in the bowling circle you get a zero for that frame. Most team captains do not enforce the rule. Get that rule in place and as soon as the first guy disappears jump up there and give him a zero. You'll see how often they stay in the bowling circle. Of course, you'll have to wait until next year to get a rule like that in place since I doubt you'll get the 100% needed to add it this year.

A league rule would be the best solution to your problem.  Like MAJM said, if your league were to design a rule that states that a bowler not present in the pit within 1 minute of his name appearing on the automatic scorer receives a score of zero for the first ball.  After another minute, the bowler receives another zero for the second ball.  After a few zeros and lost games, your intentionally slow team will figure out that they need to be on point when their names appear on the screen.

Most of the leagues Ive ever bowled in have that rule on the book, but its only enforced in extreme situations.
