Tipping for Jackpots

It has become customary in our league that when you win a jackpot, you tip the person who runs the jackpot.  Recently, the guy who runs the lucky strike jackpot (which tends to build up over time), told me he was pretty upset because he felt he didn't get a big enough tip from a friend of mine who won the jackpot.  It was a $1,000 jackpot, for which my friend gave a $50 tip.  The guy who runs the jackpot thought he should get at least 15-20% as a tip, which seems a little excessive to me.

In your leagues, do you tip the people who run the jackpots, and if so, what is considered a decent tip?

No we don't usually tip and I think he should feel very lucky that he got 50 bucks.  If I had won I would have tipped him if it is the practice, but I would not have given him 50 bucks.

A beer is all our guy takes for mystery pot.
He doesn't want to be accused of cheating, pulling a friends # and splitting the money.

I believe the other pots are the same.

Ours is he gets a free entry into the weekly jackpot. No tipping.

free entry actually sounds better to me really, but it's the leagues established "thing" so I just tip the guy, I think it's too steep but who am I to change it.....

A free beer or two, or maybe five bucks.  Maybe ten bucks for a really big pot.  I've never heard of tipping someone $50 for a pot.  The etiquette of tipping is, however, an arcane art known but to the cognoscenti who write of such things for major newspapers and is very mysterious to lowly peons such as myself.  I say, take your damn five or ten bucks and be happy with it, or,or.....HULK SMASH!

I think $50 was more than fair.

I tip but it depends on the amount of the jackpot. If it is lower than $30 I might give $2 and buy him a beer. That is considered HUGE by some standards. Hell, if any of the older guys in the leagues win they don't give a penny.

I think a tip, even if the guy gets in free should be required. Most of the time it is unexpected money anyways.

The middle of the road ages always seem to tip better 25-50. Younger ones and older ones are pretty tight.

Why should the person who runs the jackpot get a tip from the winner? Chances are, he/she volunteered to run it and it certainly is not difficult work and most of all, they did not do anything special for the winner. tipping is the reward for providing special service. The idea of tipping for everything is B.S.

10%.On my Sun. morning league,which pays out over $3800 weekly the 10% is taken out before jackpots are paid.I have never bowled in a league where the jackpots are expected to be taken up gratis.I suppose you guys don't tip the score keepers when you bowl tournaments either.Sheech Peachy was right bowlers are cheap.

Tipping for running a jackpot???  I've never heard of such a thing!  And, I can't say that I feel it is justified either.

Around here, when they run brackets, the fellow who is running the brackets does get a cut out of each bracket payout, but that cut is determined up front.  The fellow running brackets gets less than 10% for doing all of the bookkeeping, bringing his computer for the brackets, and chasing down the scores each game.  In fact, when the bracket fellow is bowling at the same time, he will often get one of the younger girls in the center to chase down the individual scores, and he gives her a cut of his cut.....that way all he has to do is to enter the scores at the end of each game and post the updated sheets on the wall.

But tipping for a jackpot???  Not no, but (deleted) NO.

Reading some of these posts makes me realize once again how cheap some bowlers really are.

When you go to a restarant You tip the waitress for bringing the food and making sure you have refills on your beverage of choice. She is offering you a service that does not include cooking the food.

The guy that collects for jackpots is doing the same. He may even be taking away from his own scores to run around and collect the money from everyone. Then, he has to run around and check the scores.

That sounds like a service to me.

Like I mentioned in the earlier post it will depend on how much money is there. If it is $30 or less $2 is fine to give him. Once it starts reaching near $50, give the guy a 5 spot. It certainly should not break you.

THE AREA OF BRACKETS IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TOPIC. Most of the time that guy gets his money off of the top, so he does not deserve to be tipped since he probably took $5 for each bracket anyways. He is already being paid for his time.

The guy that collects for jackpot is usually doing it for naught. If he is complaining about not getting any tips then I wouldnt give him any. It is a courtesy.
He is still doing it for nothing. So give the guy a few bucks and stop being so cheap.

which is really about 10%

because anyone that collects the pot also get in free


$250 pot

id give 20 bucks plus he saved 5 for getting in=$25
