Tips for the US Open Pattern?
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:37:54 AM »
Anyone have tips on the US Open Pattern? I have bowled on it before and I have never done much other than shot 180s.

don't get worked up when leaving spare after spare after spare its not supprising from any bowler. get it to about the tenth board at the breakpoint, do not give the 3 pin away as they say because if its hooking from 10 it is not very likely you'll miss the headpin. don't go for splits unless they are like baby splits washouts the simple splits basically (get all the wood you can). and most importantly make spares. go strait to avoid chopping them off

For me being patient is a must. Don't give the pocket away, even if you're not carrying. Make your spares and hopefully you'll get a double or two somewhere during the game. At some point the lanes may open up for a few frames and you might be able to throw some big strings for a game or two.

I throw balls that are predictable and rolly but nothing with a real strong cover. I stay away from anything that changes directions suddenly. I may give up a little carry because of the smoother rolling balls but that usually means I'm leaving less splits, washouts and other nasty leaves so it's better over the long run.

I'm 17mph @ 280rpm so I usually start by playing straight up the boards in the 7-10 range. After 3-4 games the middle usually blows up from the higher rev guys and I'll move into the 17-22 range out to 10-12 at the break point. The balls that have worked for me on this pattern are a Spit Fire, Agent, Shift and Zone Classic.

Alot of it is surface of the lanes. Are you bowling on full synthetics, wood or half an half?

Somewhat inside, starting around 15 at the arrows out between 10-12 at the break point and let the ball roll back, I move deeper as needed, eventually I will ball down and move back a little then continue left and repeat process.

a good point from al_g is being patient. remember at the us open where norm duke won chris loschetter didn't get any doubles the hole game in the position round then gets his first double of the match in the tenth and beats doug kent to advance to the number 2 seed, he was patient and got that double.
