Tips on slowing down ball speed?
« on: February 28, 2006, 04:43:07 AM »
I know this is something that could really help my game, as I'm on the low rev part of the scale and can often throw the ball through the break point.  So far I'm having a little trouble getting it slowed down, and I wonder if anyone else has gone through this or has any tips.  I have read the RonC articles and they have helped, but I still just have the tendency to rip it.

I have the same problem on some tournament conditions.  I have found, for me, that when I am skating past my breakpoint and need to slow the ball speed down to increase entry angle, to lower the ball way down in my stance and bend my knees a little more.  This slows my ball speed down and actually gives ME more side rotation.  It may be a mental thing, but it gets me through the oily conditions until they break down.

lowering your ball in your stance is the best way to do it. Make sure you don't lower it to much or you could throw off your timing! But you shouldn't have to lower it that much where it would. I actually had to do this last night.

I have the same issue.  I too hold the ball lower in my stance.  The other thing my coach told me was to start approch a little closer to fould line.  This shortens and slows my approach some.  Both of these have really helped.

Lower the starting position of the ball at yourt setup (FREE ARMSWING), push the ball down slightly as you start instead of out straight or "over the bar" as Jowdy says (FREE ARMSWING), start a bit closer to the foul line (FREE ARMSWING), and did I mention  ... a "free armswing" ???

There are several traditional methods.
- hold the ball lower in your stance. (This could change your timing; so it's often done with the next one.)
- move your feet 4-12" forward on the approach, forcing you to take smaller steps, which usually slows feet and armswing down.
(Often the above two are done together.)
- move your target closer to the foul line. If you target at the arrows, move it 1-5 feet closer. Some people target at the dots. If you target at the breakpoint, as I do, move it to 35 or 40 feet.
- lay the ball down closer to the foul line; the point is to reduce the loft over the line. If you already are very close, ignore this one, of course.

Just got back from practicing and was suppose to be with my new ball - Centrifugal Mass, but the thumb didn't feel good and so my driller is redoing it.  So I worked on .... slowing my ball speed down by lowering my ball in the stance.

Worked pretty well; threw 14 in a row and left a rock solid 9-pin the 15 ball.  Throwing my old 3D Superhook - '98 vintage.  I've been using it the past couple of months - I really like the way it revs up and its continuous backend - if I don't throw it through the breakpoint!

I've been in a slump for a couple of months even though I've thrown a couple of 700's during that period, it hasn't felt right.  I've been training myself to get more kneebend and getting a stronger base for my release, keeping my hand more behind the ball - leading with the ring finger per John Jowdy, making sure I'm seeing my target at the release, blah, blah...

The main thing that's been causing the unsure feeling has been my speed overshadows my rev-rate - my swing has been forced.  Sounds like you have the same problem and everyone that replied had great answers.

Relaxed, smooth, unforced, pendulum armswing; smaller arc; slower speed!

Hold it lower in the stance; focus on your target; allow your subconscious to bowl!
