Hey all, I have been having some problems staying behind the ball. When I do stay behind the ball, it feels like im forcing the ball to kinda hook when I do release at the bottom. I have been told that I tend to turn my hand a little early or I come around the balls(causing a Side roll) something which I do not want.

Does anyone have any tips or drills that they can suggest in order to help me stay behind the ball?

Staying behind the ball is such a misconception these days. If you truly stayed behind the ball, you would throw the ball straight as an arrow.

You must at some point get your hand around the side of the ball to get it to hook.

Take your hand and football flip it, you do not stay behind the back of the ball. Your fingers start to the inside of the ball (the back) and then they rotate the ball counter clock wise.

You do need some side roll, or the ball will never hook.

That isnt 100% true. Depending on layout of the ball, and shape of the core...your ball can hook throwing it with forward roll. It all depends on how the weight of the core takes over.

Rev Rate-400ish

Ball Speed 18.0-19.0 mph

Try keeping you elbow in at the bottom of your swing.

staying behind the ball pertains to your elbow & forearm staying 'behind' the ball and your hand rotates around the ball. If your elbow rotates around the ball as well as your hand this is improper.

Go see a real certifed coach that can properly teach you what you need to know and feel. Go to bowlingchat.net and talk with Mo Pinel and the coaches there. Your going to get much better information there about all your bowling questions. You can even post videos and get drills and skills to work on.

Try Norm Duke's video and the drills with the tuna can and the one knee drill. This will teach you how to keep your hand and elbow behind the ball, and the feel rotation in the release.

Here is a good look at what different releases look like from behind before the ball is rotated. Picture #1 is directly "behind" the ball. The rotation will be forward. The others have the fingers inside the ball prior to the rotation that will be more around the ball.

Ryan...either go see Rick next month, or do what I've done and see Debbie (cause Rick's so far). Also, I think there's a cert. coach in your area too. check it out.

Finally, you can't be like A. I. .."practice ?!".... I know you're bz, but try to get some lane time. IMO nobody should be upset with themselves about their (struggling) game if he/she just bowls 3-5 games a week. Gotta put in the time bro...

I'm coming into town next month for Sac Nisei (Feb 19th, I think), I'll take a look at your game if you want. IMHO, unless you've changed, you were a little too much up the back or behind it from what I remember, this is what causes your lack of entry angle at point of impact.

Forward roll isn't always a positive thing on the THS (ie. Landpark) unless the bowler can get their speed to rev ratio to match better. If they don't match speed to revs well enough, they're forced to play in the oil more but when they try and swing this release, it doesn't recover enough (lack of necessitated axis rotation) and they're stuck in tweener hell as well.

yeah that sounds good Rick! James and I used to practice on the weekends or weekdays whenever we had a chance. But since I moved back to Stockton we dont practice as much.

I never knew I was too much up the back. I didnt even know I was forward Rolling the ball.

Go to Youtube and look up Norm Duke instructional videos. There should be a 6 part series. Norm shows some good exercises for practicing staying behind the ball.
