Off the Approach
« on: September 20, 2008, 11:27:34 AM »
If you have bowled for a while, you get to see just about everything.  This Thursday in our mixed league, there was a woman who started her approach from 2 feet behind where the wooden approaches begin.  She started on the tile, stepped up on to the approach and continued to the foul line.  Is this even legal ... I would assume so, but I thought it was pretty strange.

I didn't think it would be illegal, but I guess I would kind of consider it like out of bounds in other sports.

Not illegal, but how many league bowlers look that far back to see if the bowler next to them is about to start their approach?

same here... you have to take one step up on the approach... no way starting your approach back there.

as long as it does not interrupt anyone else....

Do you think anyone would get pissed if I started my approach from the bar?

I would love to see you grab your ball off the rack without missing a step in your approach and screwing up your timing! Talk about an interesting video.

My teammate starts off the approach with a 5 step approach.   Even with a step up he doesn't miss a step.  Even with a step down it helped him.   He throws on average about 19mph, green alien.   avg. 210ish

I bowled with a guy who would take a 15 (+/-2) step approach if he had to use his spare ball.  He would go get his ball out of the bag and wouldn't stop walking until he got to the foul line.  He claimed it helped him to "not over think it," but I think he just did it for attention.  He would then return his spare ball to his bag so he could repeat the process if necessary.  Evidently it also motivated him to throw more strikes.
