Anyone go up to 16lbs? Why?
« on: September 15, 2011, 01:04:09 AM »
I'm thinking of going back up to 16 lbs. in ball weight.  I feel like my back swing is getting a little crazy with a 15 lb. ball and the 16 lb. ball will help some.  Also, I notice that due to my spin/rotation, I do leave an occational 8-10.  I think the extra weight might help here.

Also, I'm buff so the extra pound is nothing.

Did you go up?  Why?  Did it help?

TIA

The vast majority of my customers use 15 lb, there are probably even more 14 lb than 16 lb.  The 15 lb balls seem to carry as well as or better than 16 lb as long as the customer can throw a decent speed, say 16 mph at the pins.  For those of us that are speed challenged (12.5 mph at the pins for me, and dropping weight doesn't speed that up) and can throw 16 lbs, I think they carry better at the low speed.  --  JohnP

As my age increased, and my knees got worse, I moved down to 15 and then to 14#.  Each move proved to hit weaker.    Also I noticed I had to have a more "perfect" hit to strike.  I finally figured out with the lighter balls I was "overthrowing" them.  Got both knees replaced, went back to 16# stuff.  Timing came back, didn't force the ball any more.  The old timing thing "wait for the ball" came back.  There are going to be exceptions, but I feel like you should use a weight you can't force through the down swing.
