It's a toss up in my experience.  I've thrown 300 games where I can honestly say I didn't deserve, others I did.  I think it takes more luck to shoot the 300 even if you're a skilled bowler because of so many outside variables.  I can hit the pocket all day long and make spares to shoot the 800, 267 is no small number but it's not 300.

The 800 series is, by far, harder to accomplish than the 300 game.  There are far more 300 games shot each year than there are 800 series.

There are at least 5 300's shot each year for each 800. However that number is jaded some as you only will have 1 chance for a 300 in league versus 3+ chances for the 300 game.

I do believe the 800 is tougher as a couple bad breaks can stop an 800 and those are pretty easy to come by in 3 games. But a few good breaks can make a 300.

Few 800's are flukes. Higher skilled players will shoot more 300's than 800's but the percentage difference will shrink with skill level. They will stay in the pocket and if the carry is good they can survive a few taps and get to the 800.
