To those who have switched bowling hands
« on: July 02, 2003, 05:53:42 PM »
I know there are some people on this site who switched bowling hands well into their bowling "career". To all of you who have, how hard was it? Did you have to buy lighter weight equipment, or did you redrill your existing stuff?

I am left eye dominant and right handed. I have been having more and more problems with targeting lately and have been thinking of switching to left handed. I shoot pool with my wife and have to constantly remind myself to aim with my left eye which feels a little weird. I have tried bowling left handed for fun in the past (with my right handed drilled equipment) and didn't bowl too bad. (20-30 games total Average ~150) My left arm is definitely weaker than my right but what do you expect. I am pretty close to being ambidextrous but I have not really practiced other things with my left hand as much.

If I do switch hands, I will probably trade or sell off my equipment that I have now. I guess I will be giving Doug some more business.

What does everyone think?

Thanks,
Kalannar

cmna,

I am not exactly sure which eye is stronger but I know I shoot a rifle better with my right eye. But I have to close my left eye to aim. If not I am really siting with my left. I found this out when I was in basic training with the Marine Corp. I can do a lot of things half way decent with my left hand so switching shouldn't be to hard. I actually shoot pool better left handed but I haven't gotten the coordination to break left handed.

One thing I want to do is to learn without a wrist brace so I don't get stuck with having to use one if I switch. I use a Cobra 3 right now and want to stop using it but it makes my wrist hurt when I bowl without it. Maybe I should drill my V2 for left handed and start playing with it over the summer. I need to plug it any way.

I'm currently in the middle of converting from righty to lefty and currently ave 225+ as a righty. I've been bowling righty for 30+ years though I'm predominantly left-handed. My left knee (sliding) has been really bothering me off and on the past few yrs - so I finally decided to make an attempt at lefty. I bought a pair of shoes and a used 14 lb lefty drilled ball from someone on this site. I've been going a couple times a week for about 5 weeks now and though it was a bit awkward at first, things have been coming together. I'm not all that worried about scores right now, just trying to develop some consistency, but I'm probably averaging 160+. I've been tinkering with my grip trying to get things right and also just bought a new ball - RockStar since the Ti msgr was hooking too much. In fact I've been hooking that ball more than I ever hooked anything righty. I still haven't decided whether I'm going to bowl a league lefty this winter season or not, if I don't, I'll continue to practice lefty anyways. The next month or so might push me to possibly doing one league with each hand - I normally bowl 2 leagues.

I think I'm left eye dominant too.

Good luck.
