Tolerance ....
« on: November 22, 2003, 09:00:37 PM »
I may have outlived any use I thought I might be able to offer other bowlers, here at ballreviews.com. The reason I say this is because I just looked at the bowlers I have placed on my Ignored List, many of them just recently. I seem to have grown intolerant of nastiness, stupidity and people unwilling to admit they don't know everything about everything. I know I have much more to learn about all facets of bowling, but I have learned a little bit and thought I could offer an opinion and a fact or two here and there.

Maybe I am reading and posting too early in the morning, when my politeness and societal filters are not yet up and too late at night when my filters have dropped. I don't know.

I find myself almost losing my temper when reading many posts and replies lately. I don't know if anyone else does this or feels this way. There are many people here with whom I enjoy exchanging ideas, lending what info I can, and  learning what facts I can. But recently there are so many more whom I just don't understand what they are saying and there are some, whom I do not understand why they are saying what they say. I often ask but get no meaningful reply or one that makes any sense to me. I don't think I am a stupid person, so I wonder what is going on here at ballreviews.

I have felt like this for about 2 months now; I don't recall what started it, but I keep coming back, more to look for good post by good people, newbies or old. The percentage of these seems to have been reduced, shrunken by quite a bit now.

(Maybe this should have been in Miscellaneous Non-Bowling, but it seems bowling indformation related.)

I am not weak but I do use my ignore list.

I have people on there that are bad traders/sellers.
I have people on there that cannot comprehend what a punctuation
mark is, as well as people that are just total asses.
I only have 5 or 6 people on my list. 3 of them are the same user
that keeps changing names.
bowlerbob is oh sooo close to being NEXT.

I would think it would be more useful to know if that person was trying to con someone else later on.  By putting them on Ignore, you might not see that they were at it again and someone else would get burnt.

I UNDERSTAND.
Please give Bowler(?)Bob another chance. I replied to a private message of his with some serious suggestions and he seemed amenable. We'll see. He seems to want to help, even if he appears a little naive.

Hamster....no offense if you feel I pointed you out, you aren't one of the "kids" I was actually referring too.  Sometimes it's fun to mess w/ people here and there on the NON bowing related board, but a lot of these characters are going on for DAYS !

Charlest,
I too responded to a bowlerbob private message, ...I'll give him a chance as well.

Bones,

Of course, there are more good ones than bad ones.
It's not the initial post itself in general, that bothers me. More often than not, I'll be reading a thread, the initial post and the answers, making a reply of two along the way, when I come across a rely that either comes completely out of left field or is just blithering nonsense. Most of the time I do refrain, like Hamster suggests, from making any reply or other notice.

But lately, the number of such replies and initial posts have been mentally and emotionally staggering. It's like there was both a huge reduction in people who can read or write English AND huge increase in those who bowl but know nothing about it and who have never watched ANYONE bowl for more than 3 or 4 seconds.

It's become just mind numbing.

In both your father's day and my father's and grandfather's day, people wanted knowledge for the sake of knowledge, even immigrants scrambling to make a living. In this day of the "dumbing down of America", far too many people's response is "why do I need to know that?", no matter what the subject matter is. From some of the posts I have seen recently, I wonder how true you father's words still are today?

BUT I don't give up on anything easily!

We ALLcould use a little more tolerance.

We aren't the end to be all in the bowling world.  A few rotten apples always spoil it for others.  I may not agree with you but it is very easy to pass over what I don't wish to read.  I just pass by the users that I know for me are rotten apples.

Just as in spam in your e-mail there is always power in the delete key.

Take a few days off of ballreviews.  It may help.

Charlest, you bring out some extremely relative, but sad revelations regarding what has been transpiring recently. As to myself, I mostly read the posts, and am not as active as most in actually posting. I do have some very enlightening and educational PM's with several users such as Doug Sterner, andy from BowlersAid, and Sawbones, just to mention a few. But this never ending barrage of personal bashing and attacks, along with uneducated BS, wether it is bowling related or not, is tiresome. I stated in another post that although I dislike "over moderation" of a forum, it appears that this site is in desperate need of some type of "active" moderator.
But as also stated, I am just an old moron with Alzheimer's.

Sometimes its a case of jelousness.
We have what I would call a very strong board here, with some very knowledgable people on it.
People come on and see all of this cameraderie between regulars and they feel they have to join in. They dont necesarilly have the knowledge to add to the conversation, but they try to be cute and sometimes disrespectful just because they can do that safe in the knowledge that no one knows who they are.
Im the type of person that was brought up to respect everyone old and young.
I love this game and this board and have great respect for the people on it.
I just think youll always have people who try to spoil good things, you just have to try to get past them and see the real people that are there, like you, to learn and have fun.

I read a lot of different post including Big Al Woolum on some forums.  There are a bunch of young pups on forums that still have things to learn about the game.  On the other hand there are many old dogs out there that need to do the same.  I think manners may be what is needed from time to time.  Anytime you get a mixture of personalities from all over the globe and different sub cultures then you are asking for a tempest on occasion.  It takes stepping back and going good grief I was rude and hey man I'm sorry or just understanding that you won't get along with everyone.  I ignore my brother in law case in point .

charlest: I don't know if I'm on your ignore list. Assuming you're reading this, please don't assume you've outlived your usefulness on the forum. You are one of the few who provide really helpful information, and I'd hate to see you disappear. Especially in the area of coverstock maintenance, I've learned some additional insights from your posts. I have to believe others have benefited as well.

Remember that this is a public forum where no qualification other than the ability to register is required for participation. So your going to get a lot of really stupid stuff posted. I deal with it by poking back the offenders, but that's obviously a losing battle (there are way too many).

Take Doc's advice and apply a coat of human Elixir. You won't be as bothered as you clearly are now.

I trust you guys' judgement, do as you like; but I have a really hard time believing that Bowler bob is a true life person. Reread a couple of posts. If he is for real he has me fooled, because I can't believe anyone with their own computer could be that thick. I get a laugh sometimes at how gullible many posters are, replying over and over to an antagonizer who (to me) is obviously just out to pull anybodies chain he can get a hold of. The thread on the Golden Nugget struck me as just plain silly.
I do, like you all, get aggrevated with the superfluous cursing, insulting (not joking), and prank Reviews/repies to prank reviews. Moderation to some degree does seem warranted. That is unless the goofballs grow up a little real soon.
