How do you line up on the approach?
« on: November 29, 2008, 06:02:43 PM »
I'm starting to get back into bowling after a two year layoff. I've been hanging out at my local center on league nights with old bowling friends, watching everyone bowl. I was watching how people would line up for there shots. Some people would line up using there slide foot, others would use there push-off foot. I seen a few people with a thin piece of tape in the center of there slide foot to line up. I personally use the inside of my slide foot to line up with the dots on the approach. Just curious what everyone on here uses to get lined?

I use my sliding foot's shoe tip on the starting board as reference, and since I tend to have a long sliding step (plus a 5-step-approach) I start from the final set of dots.

AFAIK, the "book reference" is the sliding foot's sole inside, but I personally found the shoe tip to be easier to "handle" since I have a better view on it at the approach (which is a 1.5 board deviation to the left for the standard often mentioned in books).

I start out lining up the inside of my slide foot.  Then I adjust by using the tip of my shoe.

I line up with the inside of my slide foot like above. It was a simple tip on this board that started me doing that and has helped me line up quicker. I used to use the center of my toe.

You should use your sliding foot so you can easily compare starting position to where you end up at the foul line.  What part of the sliding foot doesn't matter as long as you are consistent.  If you're comparing with someone else, just be sure you both know what part of the foot is being used.  --  JohnP

Since most bowlers with a free swing release their ball about 7" on average from the inside edge of the slide foot I teach that as the line up point. If I'm showing a bowler 18 to 8 I'll have him stand with the inside edge on 25. Most bowlers will naturally put it down(if they walk straight) on 18 so we only have to consentrate on the 8 board.

Right-handed player. I line up with the outside of the right foot. By the arch, to be exact.

Why the outside of the right foot? In order to keep my approach and swing straight.
