too many balls
« on: May 25, 2008, 06:02:11 AM »
It's similar to BAS (Ball Aquisition Syndrome), but more the result of never discarding an existing ball vs the purchase of new ones.  Other people buy new balls and throw or give away an old one. I very rarely discard a ball.

Help !  Please give me ideas for giving a few of them away. Keep in mind that most are 16 lbs, and the school programs or coaches I have talked to always seem to want 15lbs.

Thanks for any ideas.

Here's a few things that some of my customers have done or I have seen locally.

A couple of them paint the ball, differently and set them out along a walk between the house and garden.

One guy has drilled very large holes in the bottom and placed them on the fence poles next to his gate for the driveway.

One man, kinda cute but I do not know how he did it, put a pole through the center of 5, and that's his mail box 'stand'.

I have two, that I use as door stops. I cut one in half and put it next to the outside door, but I didn't do a good job so I'll probably toss that one.

I have seen, in ebay garden section, several painted and put in flower beds, garden, kinda cute.

Last, if you don't want to try to sell them, just drop them in the racks at the center, I'm sure someone will use them.

Give them to the Salvation Army or Rescue Mission and write them off against your taxes.

I happen to run a specialized ball disposal service.  Send them to me and I will make sure they are disposed of properly.

What do you have in 16 lbs, maybe we can work something out.

Or just go down to your local center and put them on the rack. Somebody will definately use them at some point. My cousin took a ball off the rack recently and got it redrilled. Somebody will get some use out of it.

Been there, am there now X TEN!

Any ball I want to keep is the one most in demand that eveyrone will buy immedately.

Any ball I put up for sale will sit there for 3 months with no takers until someone wants to see pictures of it. Then after my prodding them for 3 days for some kind of reply, yes or no, they tell me that they decided on another ball.

Keep them. If you really don't use them for 6 months, put them up for sale here. If they go without a query for 1 week, put them on the rack at the nearest center and it will disappear within 24 hours.

I trade them in to my local pro shop.  He gives anywhere from $20 to
$40 for them.  At least I get something in return.  Oh by the way, he
just gives credit not cash.  He also has a thriving Ebay business.

I forgot to mention that part of my problem is that I actually feel compelled to USE all of the balls as well. Some only get a game or so once a year, much the way someone with an antique car (a collector?) would take their prized possession out for a spin on a  spring or summer day, yet keep it in the garage most of the time.

Giving a few away would be fine, but it has to be something permanent. If a ball is left at the center, I might some day be tempted to steal the thing back! Nothing will have been accomplished as I may have bought a new ball by then and will now have increased my number of balls again.

I live in a Condo, so there's no backyard or outside property to get creative with. Though I liked those ideas cause they were permanent in that the balls are rendered un-useable.

And each one has a story. I remember certain high games bowled with each one....even the really old and obsolete ones. And --- I'm kind of lazy about bothering with Ebay, since the most I would expect to get for the older stuff (5 plus years old) would be maybe $30 a piece.  My REAL problem is getting to the point where I am willing to part with any of them. :-(

I'll list them here just to satisfy anyone's curiosity and actually take an inventory of which ones I MIGHT be willing to part with. But... like I said, the problem is, I can make an excuse for keeping all of them.

Here goes. They are listed in something close to chronological order, but not scientifically. And all are reactive Resin or Particle Balls, right-handed, 16 lbs, and without grips, unless otherwise specified:

1) Brunswick Black Diamond (rubber, 15 lbs, grips)
2) Brunswick Tommy Hudson (plastic, grips)
3) Champions Ultimate Weapon
4) Champions Ultimate Weapon, ball #2
5) Brunswick Command Zone
6) Columbia Total Chaos (15 lbs, and not sure of exact name it's black or grey)
7) Columbia Complete Chaos
8) Storm El-Nino X-it (15 lbs, grips)
9) Storm Trauma Recovery (15 lbs)
10) Brunswick Danger Zone HPC (may be 15 lbs)
11) Storm Triple X Factor
12) Storm Triple X Factor, ball #2
13) Storm Triple Xtreme
14) Storm Triple Xtreme, ball #2 (15 lbs)
15) Ebonite Big One (15 lbs)
16) Ebonite Big One, ball #2 (grips)
17) Columbia Messenger (14 lbs, left-handed)
18) Ebonite Raid
19) Hammer Anger
20) Black Widow Bite
21) Hammer Anger, ball #2
22) Ebonite Raid, ball #2

I know, I know.... I'm kinda sick.  :-)

My favorites (or top seeds) of the newer balls are the Raid, Anger, and Bite. But I still love my Command Zone, X-It, & Triple Xtreme.

The plastic and rubber balls are virtually useless to me as I do not use spare balls, but once in awhile when lanes are toast, they're handy. And they're sentimental favorites, being old and unusual.

All the rest in-between, are used in varying degrees, sometimes in the closet for months and sometimes pressed into service. My wife kiddingly complains about the closet clutter, but has no idea just how bad it is.

Is there a cure for this ??????

:-)

I just throw the old ones in the garbage can. Sell them on ebay? Too much trouble to pack them up properly and take them to the UPS pickup place.

Local Pro Shop only allows $15.00 for a trade-in and alot of the local charities will not accept them.

Youse guys who keep old balls forever are sickos!!!! At least bowling balls do not rot and stink!! (Except the Storm balls and they stink when new).

Funny you should say that, I have 73 of them in my basement right now. They are stuck in the furnace room to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Not one of them has cracked yet.
