Tools?
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:32:29 AM »
I know there is a tool for cleanly, easily removing finger grips. Is there such a tool for removing thumb inserts? If not, what do you all use to cleanly, easily get thumb inserts out?

TIA

There is a similar tool made for removing the vinyl thumb inserts.  It's a coin toss as to whether the insert will be reusable though.  Some shops just use too much glue.

For removing urethane and vinyl slugs the best way is to use a drill press and a bit a couple sizes smaller than the slug to prevent the issue of enlarging the hole if you don't match the pitch perfectly.  The remaining portion of the slug is then a lot easier to remove.

Drill press to remove urethane slugs.  I will not carry vinyl thumb slugs.  We have a few left over from the previous owner.  Most of the old stock of inserts and slugs we have got rid of.  I threw the vinyl thumb inserts in the trash the day I took over the shop.

I just drill 'em out with my drill press.  Couldn't see them coming out, even if I didn't glue them in.  It takes a good bit of pressure to get them in the ball in the first place.

Vinyl is tacky to the skin with humidity.  Thumbs tend to stick to the vinyl slugs and cause problems such as blisters.  Vinyl slugs do not work as well as urethane when it comes to carving them with a bevel knife.  They also do not sand very well.   So we do not carry them when the urethane slugs are easier to work with and are a superior product.  Cost is not a factor.

Are you talking about thumb slugs or thumb sleeves/inserts?

Smash, if you don't carry vinyl products how do you keep the ball from shooting off of a slick/dry thumb?  My local shop doesn't see the need for using vinyl very often, but he finds it useful when a person doesn't have enough skin moisture or surface texture for urethane.

We very rarely have that problem.  Urethane handles just about everything.  I do occasionally have that problem myself and I drill the hole so that I can have 1 piece of white tape in the front just for feel.  I do check the thumb moisture and ask questions before drilling.  There are adjustments you do make as a ball driller for things like skin moisture/dryness, thumb length, being double jointed etc.  Making sure the thumb size and pitches are correct is important.  There are still times when it does happen and everyone is on a case by case basis but vinyl is the very last resort.  Typically something else is causing that issue.

Chief Eddie Special K,

How or Why would you ask that question since you drive
the Bus your little wet nap rides on... I'm sure it is
filled with his Posse.  I remember some of the names like
the Wacky Wavy Arm Guy, the Wearer of the Morse Code Ring
and the Reader of Marvel Comics.  The rest of the Gang from
Sesame Street eludes me at this moment in time or in the words
of Chief Whistler, "You can't always see the roses unless you
know where they are most of the time."

Peace out Snupalupticus

Chief Mushmouth, Dumb Donald, Bucky, Russell or
Weird Harold,

Maybe Bill Cosby would understand your attempt at humor
or maybe not since it's not funny!  In the words of
Chief Whister, "Those who read more usually for the most
part always see moore." Perhaps watching Daddy's DVDs of
Fat Albert has given you more than visions of sugar plums
in your head. Wake up dribble king, your lost in the sauce.
