Toooo Dry For Me
« on: January 13, 2005, 03:01:10 AM »
What's going on guys. I just decided to post this because I tired of being robbed. Ball Companies keep putting all their time and effort into mass producing over aggressive high performance equipment. We buy the equipment ($150 -$200+) and go to big tournaments expecting to use this stuff. However, the directors put out driest condition they can find and all that over aggressive equipment spends most of its time in the bag while we throw plastic or some light oil ball that is a corner pin monster. The best balls (my opinion) for dry conditions are the sonic X and the V2 Dry which they have stopped making. I want to know from you guys do you feel the same way I do. Because I can stand seeing these bowlers pulling out these big pieces to bowl on the dry conditions messing up the track area. If not your feelings just tell me about your past experiences with this subject(like did this happen to you).

It's understandable..especially being a tournament bowler.  But going into the tournament (unless its the first time you have ever been there), you should have an idea of the lane conditions you will be facing and consequently take along equipment to best match up.  As far as other bowlers "messing-up" the track area by using aggressive equipment...that's kind of silly.  I would actually prefer being on a pair with 4 other bowlers using aggressive equipment playing in the track area.  This opens up the pattern somewhat, thus allowing me to get inside them and swing to the dry they have created.  If you have ever seen some of the top teams bowl (either amateur or collegiate), they all throw practice, as many balls as they can get, in the track area to try and open it up.. then adjust and play off it.  Its a great way to make a really tough shot, more manageable.

Hey strapper you make a great point but I'll give you an of example.
-As far as track area, I just happened to be watching tournament that I was at in which the directors ran a shot with 50ml per board from 10 to 10, from 10 to 7 there was dry and a serious out of bounds. Both teams that i was watching had come off of 1050 games. Every one was playing down and in from 10 to 5 except for one bowler. she was swinging a Rule from 21 to 8 and started with the front 6(I believe, im not sure), any way by the 8 frame she had pushed alll that oil down the lane and in her teammates track area and she could not get the ball to  hit the pocket from anywhere and her teammates track area was ruined. She shot 220 but her teammates shot 170, 150, 140, and 150, all because their equipment kept pushing further and further. I understand what you were saying about adjustment but their is no way you can adjust that much in the course of one game. I think you have to equate the lack of knowledge for some bowlers.

One of the coaches in our area has been "preaching" circling of the heads.  It seems to be very effective for conditions like this.  For a righty, move left with your feet, and bring your breakpoint back towards you.  When everyone else is playing down the boards at a breakpoint of 40 or 42',  you can swing the ball and play a break point of 35 to 37'.  Only requirement is that you need to be able to generate some revs.  I have been playing around with the idea in leagues a little lately.  When everyone is playing in the track area..or starting to bump in to catch oil a  little, I have been standing 10 to 15 boards deeper and swinging the ball out to the dry a little earlier than normal.  Everyone else is dealing with carry down and over/under.. and I've had a pretty decent look.  The only down side i have seen so far is that you need to be fairly consistant... it you push the ball through the breakpoint, it doesn't come up... and if you tug the ball a little, it usually doesn't come up.
