League/Tournament balls separate from Practice balls
« on: August 01, 2003, 02:51:46 AM »
Here's an interesting topic...

Normally I have a set of 3-4 balls set away to practice with besides the good stuff I have that I use for Tournaments and League bowling.  At first I started doing this because alot of the houses in our area are so poor that balls often come back seriously scratched up or with black belt marks galor on them and I didn't want to track and dirty up my new stuff so fast.  Now it's become almost routine for me.

I have an Assassin, Silencer, Matrix Trimax 3 and a few other older balls that have been plugged quite a few times that I practice with since I don't really care if they get messed up by the lanes or not.  Plus they are all drilled for very low flare, low hook, or just to roll out; so in practice I learn to adjust alot better and learn how to play different parts of the lane to get to the hole and it seems to help alot when I get to bowling for stakes and I have to adjust.

But my new stuff...no way will I bowl with it in some of the houses I practice at due to their conditions.  Every now and then I'll take one of the balls from my tournament arsenal just to get the right feel for it and to make sure I still understand what kind of reaction I get out of the ball.

Does anyone else do this?  Would anyone else consider doing this?

Hello all,

Very astute observation Bones...  Quality practice as opposed to quantity practice or quality practice vs: scoring practice shows the bowler vs: the wannabe bowler.

The ability to read the lanes is something that takes time on the condition your bowling on and being able to make spares regardless of the conditions your bowling on is the key to being a competitive bowler.

As far as using discarded equipment to practice with...  If your working on your mechanics and making adjustments within giving parameters, it's quality practice.

DP3, you sound like you have the feel for your tournament shots, it's just your not willing to give up your tournament equipment to wear and tear in practice.  Not a bad policy in my book.

After thinking about this for a bit, I think that if your getting quality practice time in, regardless of what your using, your going to know if you made a good or bad shot.  If this saves wear and tear on your "good stuff" then I think it's a good deal.  Nothing wrong with being practical.

Myself, I don't have trouble with the lanes I practice at regarding ball mauling.  I save all my older equipment for experiments in drills, (or I donate them to the youth league.)  I can't tell you how many times that I've bought new equipment and after a couple of weeks have asked myself, "What would this have done if..."  Just another facet of the practice game I guess...  So I'll plug and try a new drill and see where it goes.  Just as important to me as shooting spares in that it furthers your understanding of the equipment.

Whatever it takes to further your knowledge of the game...

I love throwing the 3-dot or white dot 'up the boards' during practice sessions. I also bring along a blue urethane hammer, red razor, and once in a while the black hammer. I doubt I'll wear them out, and it does save wear and tear on the reactive and particle stuff. Only downside to throwing urethane is that they are more forgiving of release variations (at least for me). If I put a bit too much rotation on a urethane hammer it doesn't JUMP like a reactive. They're also more forgiving if you HIT the realease a bit hard.
