Top Weight
« on: June 07, 2010, 10:23:36 AM »
How much top weight is too much when selecting a brand new ball.  I have always been told the general rule that drillers like to see is 3" pin and 3 ounces of top weight.

Is 4 oz of top weight (prior to drilling) too much for a driller to deal with ??

At what point would you pass on a ball because the top weight was out of proportion?

Depends on what you want to make out of it... a good ball driller should be able to drill holes so that the ball a) becomes legal and b) excessive TW (wherever it ends up) is reduced. However, high TW can limit setup options.

I've drilled some with over 5oz top weight and didn't have any trouble, though you have to use a bigger drill bit for weight hole! I know of guys that don't want a ball without about 4oz+ top weight before drilling!

As long as the driller can use some technique to get the ending static weights back to "legal", there really isn't a limit.

That being said, it would be hard to get anything with more than 6oz back to "legal".  You would have to drill it with the weight inside the gripping area, then also drill the weight hole there as well.
