how many others didn't bother to sanction this year?
« on: October 03, 2006, 05:35:46 AM »
I'm just curious...I wandered through one house the other night- it was a league that I used to bowl on- and just didn't see anything that really grabbed me and said "join and sanction."  A league I bowled last year basically imploded, so that one was out of the question...

It is beginning to look like I may just sanction unattached for nationals next year.

Anyone else do the same?

My senior league went ahead and sanctioned.  Lost by 2 votes.  Cost us two teams that went to another unsanctioned league.

Personally the only reason I see for sanctioning for seniors anymore is for the people that want to bowl handicap tournaments.  We've already gotten all the accolades and the current awards are pretty much meaningless.

Sanctioning isn't always about awards.  I wouldn't bowl unsanctioned if I had a choice.  I don't think anyone around here has even considered not sanctioning and the only non-sanctioned league around is a goof-off college league.

I'd never bowl an unsanctioned league.

The only non-sanctioned league I've ever bowled on was a summer PBA shot league, and the reason it went unsanctioned (and didn't have a prize fund, either) was so the juniors could bowl with us and not endanger their eligibility. It basically worked like loosely organized open bowling, except the shot was really tough.

As for fall leagues, I wouldn't bowl on a non-sanctioned league even if I got my bowling for free.

The only non-sanctioned league I ever bowled was a long time ago.  It was a company league for the swing shift.  We bowled at 12:30AM and it was for the summer only.

Around here I can only think of one non-sanctioned league.  It is a beginners league and thei idea is to give them a taste of league.  Most join regular sanctioned leagues within a few seasons.

If you have ever bowled in a house where there was a league where they needed the USBC bonding, you would always sanction.

Bonding is the true value of sanctioning.

If you are not a tournament bowler, there is no reason to sanction. You are only adding your $20 to the Wisconsin tax base. You get nothing in return except a magazine once in awhile. There are no youth organizations that I am aware of who turned their money over to SMART and sanctioned as a result of their dictating rules to everyone. As a matter of fact, I know many kids who went adult (even though they sholdn't have) because they couldn't get a ring anymore. So much for the future of bowling.

for the record only 10 bucks goes to the wisconsin tax base as was stated above.  Sanctioning provides a level of safety and assurance that prize money will be available if someone should run off with the cash.  Awards are another, althougth chintzy at best, tell that to the guy who shot his first 300 only to find out the league was not sanctioned.  Pretty darn near every tourney requires USBC sanctioning, local, state, and nationals.  As far as the SMART issue, I am not up on this, but I do understand that the USBC is trying to protect the future eligibility of these kids.  Have any of you delved into the NCAA bylaws, or any athletic association for that matter?  not saying the USBC is right or wrong, just stating that there are rules to follow.  I would hate to be the one to tell a parent "sorry you child lost all eligibility because they accepted a "scholarship" not recoginized by the NCAA"

with that said, i dont feel we get out moneys worth from our sanctioning dollar, but right now until someone starts something else, it is all we have and we need to make it work, or we need to work together to imporve it.  Instead of sitting here complaining about what the USBC doesnt do, get involved at the local level and help bring change around.  until enough people get nvolved it will never change

I personally wont bowl unless it is sanctioned

Jounior Bowlers Tour Southwest hasn't sanctioned.  This last week there were 4-300 games bowled.  A couple of weeks prior was another 300 game. I know 2 of the 5 never had a 300 before, and technically to USBC, they still never did.  It's ashame that USBC is forcing these Tournament to be unsanctioned.

Although our regular series tournaments are not sanctioned, the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour (NeJST) is certified to run Jr Gold Qualifiers on the same dates. We were able to get the certification because we do not award scholarships to division finalists during the regular season, only at the year ending Championship Tournament. Between now and Mother's Day we will be holding tournaments in NY, CT, MA, VT, and NH. Our schedule can be found on Bowl.com, the NeJST message board, and blog...http://nejst.blogspot.com
