Topic for youth bowlers--who do you represent?
« on: December 31, 2004, 04:22:21 AM »
This is a question for all the youth bowlers on here. In my league, we had 'qualifying windows' for the pepsi nationals (yea I know, most people dont think its a big deal or worth it or anything but whatever). You get into it for most pins over average. I was one of the couple people that made it. Well when I bowl tournies and such, I represent MYSELF, my shirt has MY name on it, not my bowling alleys. Well our league..manager (i guess you could call her?) said that I had to wear a Palace shirt. ("The Bowling Palace" is the name of the alley) I asked if I could just wear a "nice collared shirt". She had the nerve to tell me "no", so I restated my question to make sure she understood that it was a nice bowling shirt with my name and stuff. Same response, "no, you HAVE to wear a palace shirt!". I was like WTF?! So for those youth bowlers out there, do you represent yourself or the alley where you bowl? Sorry for the rant, I was just thinking about this. I know Im rambling.

BK, no I do not wear anything the bowling alley gives me for reasons i would get my @ss kicked for wearing it.

as far as them saying you HAVE to, I dont think you do, just smile nod your head and wear whatever you want, SHE cannot kick you out of the tourney for not doing so.

I'm not a youth bowler, and I don't know what kind of tournament Pepsi Nationals is as I live in United Kingdom.

Question, is your bowling centre paying for your entry fee?  If so, then I guess it's only fair to wear their shirt, if not, tell them to go f themselves!

Happy New Year and hope you win!

Its a free entry, so no they dont pay. I was curious, because I didnt want to show up wearing my shirt, and not be allowed to bowl or something. I just found it pretty gay that she had the nerve to say I 'HAVE' to wear their shirt.

Since it's free entry, then just wear whatever you want.  But bring your bowling centre's shirt with you as well, just in case.

Bottom line is, as long as you play well, enjoy yourself and hopefully win, nothing else matters.

No, I'm not a youth bowler, but I am a youth coach.  You might want to check to be sure the entry is "free."  I know in our area, the youth association pays a rather substantial fee for the top boy and the top girl in the city to participate in the Pepsi tournament.  In addition, each center may also pay to have their top bowlers represented.

It IS a big deal, and I hope you're both proud and pleased that you'll be participating in the tournament.  As a coach, I'd very much like to see my bowlers represent the center where they've learned and improved their skills.  And you might want to think about the younger bowlers in the youth league and how they probably look up to you.  Representing "their" center only raises your status in their eyes.

On a purely personal note, I bowled WIBC Nationals last year with a new team and wore what I consider to be the ugliest shirt on the face of the planet.  In addition, it was hot, uncomfortable, and not at all something I would ever buy for myself (unless forced).  Did I pay for it?  Yes.  Did I wear it?  Yes.  Did I want to? No.  But I was part of a team, and as a part of that team, I complied.  Wear the shirt and represent your center.  It'll still be your name in the top spot if you win.

Congratulations on your selection, and I hope you have an incredible tournament experience!

Well I wouldnt mind, except for the fact that I HATE my bowling alley. As a matter of fact Im leaving after this league is over. I dont owe any of my "bowling career" to that place. None of the people really helped me at all. Thats why I dont want to represent them. I didnt choose to be there, I just didnt know any better at the time.

I can relate.  I hate my bowling alley.  There's no special practice, discounts, or anything beneficial to league bowlers.  Only one person has helped me (by introducing me to a hook ball, but I'm sure I would have eventually learned it anyways) and everyone else just seems to tick me off.  Only a few employees are nice.  Only 4/40 Major division bowlers carry a 170+avg (which is pretty sad), and there are no certified or at least half decent coaches.

I owe nothing to them.  I will only use the uniform if I'm forced to.  I'll also be switching to another league next season.

Well I am a youth bowler, and of course I represent myself. But also in the bigger tournaments, like the JBT Main Event this past weekend in Vegas, or JOG in July, I will always wear my JST shirt in semis, or finals. The JST is a traveling tournament club here in Southern California, standing for the Junior Scratch Tour, and I bowl it and also help in many ways to run it. If you win a tournament you get a Champions shirt, and that is what I will usually wear at the bigger tournaments. If you want to check out the JST's website, it is www.jstbowl.com. It is slowly being updated. Happy New Year everyone.

I dont represent my alley for the reason they do not respect the youth bowlers. For one thing they layout the saturday morning pattern friday at 5, have the adult leagues then rock n bowl with no re oil, we get whats left over for saturday.

Another thing is the kids, half of the kids in the league im in should be in BUMPERS..

I bowl in two leagues in two different centres. I own a proshop in one of the two centres so i always wear a proshop shirt with my shop's name on the back and my name on the lower half, with a small logo on my left arm from the centre. keeps everyone happy so far.
