So I went to a tourney upstate and I walked in the proshop, just browsing before the 2nd shift started in the tourney. He had the Roto Mystic on the shelf posted at $134 + tax, inserts & slug extra.

I thought the price was pretty good and the fact that I DON'T inserts or slug, I would be getting the ball for about $140 out the door.

So I tell him I want to drill up the Mystic in 15lbs, he says cool  and goes in the back and gets one. I tell him the layout I want it, so he maps its out...

I carry all my specs (pitches, spans ect...) on a card in my bag.

He puts the ball on the press and starts getting ready to drill the finger holes...for INSERTS !

Now comes the good part, I tell him I don't use inserts or a slug and he almost have a sh*t fit ! He tells me that he;s never drilled a ball without inserts or a slug and that any ball that leaves his shop will have them in it !!!

Can you belive this guy ?

(BTW, inserts are $25 and a slug is $25..lol)

So, needless to say I was a little shocked at this, left me a little off guard. I've never heard this before in my life!

I ended up telling him no thankyou and left the shop...lol

I can't believe what he does..advertises prices that low, the "makes" the customer use inserts and slugs, then that adds the rest of the cost of the ball that not advertised in the price...

Unbelievable !

Why not post his name or the name of the shop and city/center you were in? Help save someone else from going to this loser.

Add to the fact that don't most balls have a disclaimer written somewhere on the box that the warranty is voided if drilled for slug and/or inserts??

Had one here too Chad, that wouldn't do it without a thumb slug at a minimum.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

That would be like ordering a steak and being told the chef only cooks them well done, and you prefer medium!

I guess everyone has a scheme to make money on drilling, why not let the quality of your work say it for you

the mark up of grips and slugs in the majority of places kills me

That's pretty harsh for someone who doesn't use grips.  Great customer service!

The shop is in upstate FL...I'm not going to post the shop's name and location, I'm not trying to call out anyones shop.

You know how small the internet is when it comes to these kinda things. I'm 99% sure that I'm the only person that refused to drill up a Mystic at the tourney..lol

I thought you guys would get a kick outta my experience with this guy. If this is the way he does business, then so be so...I'm sure he will get whats coming to him

It's very similar to the business model that Gillette and printer manufacturers use: Sell the hardware at cost or below, make it up on accessories and consumables.  I've heard that some camera shops do that as well (there was an article on /. a long time ago about someone getting a camera for a great price, then being stuck on the phone with jackholes for an hour telling them he didn't want their accessories).

I think that model sucks.  If you decide that your business model will consist a few low-margin items and a bunch of really high margin consumables/accessories, don't be surprised when people find their accessories and consumables elsewhere.  I'd rather give you a fair profit on everything than get a good deal on one thing and screwed on something else.

That system only really works when you have a monopoly on those high-margin items.  Printer manufacturers are practically crapping their pants over ink refill kits and third-party ink cartridges.  Lexmark has tried to prevent third-party cartridges from working so that you can only buy cartridges from Lexmark.  I will never own another inkjet printer again.  I need an all-in-one printer that does color and I'd rather spend $500 on a laser than $150 on an inkjet.

$25?! For grips?? That's ridiculous... what if someone just wanted to replace old grips? Would it still be $25?
