Lefty transition video
« on: July 09, 2015, 09:18:58 AM »
Yeah I know I've gone on the last several years about switching, then I don't do it, then I talk about it again, then I don't do it, etc.  Always held out hope that I could fix my right arm and it's just not happening and I'm sick of fighting it.  I didn't want to take the step back to get my left arm up to par, but my right arm isn't where I want it to be anyway and I finally realized I'm just wasting time on it.

Lefty ball roll is really good, form needs some work, but as long as the ball keeps rolling like this, I'll take it.  First video is edited and just shows ball reaction, second video is uncut and includes everything.  Trying to take it slow and make sure I don't get sloppy, but I'm definitely slow and cautious.  Started bowling lefty wearing righty shoes, so I plant, that's part of it, then just making sure I don't get into any bad habits.  Going to try to incorporate a slide, get some better knee bend, and work on what I'm doing with my right arm, BUT I don't want to mess with that ball roll.  If it stays like this and all I build is more coordination and consistency and get smoother, don't really care what it looks like, it functions really well.

Interesting note, the Hyroad I'm throwing has a righty layout on it, I just converted it instead of plugging and redrilling.  It's 100x6x45 for me lefty, and actually looks really good.

Nicely done!

Very smooth on the form and release. Granted, it is your non-preferred side, which everyone would be a bit choppy or stuttery on it as it isn't your dominant hand, but very smooth indeed. How long did it take you to get your release as good as you have it?

It's always been pretty good.  The thing about your opposite side is that there really aren't any expectations, so I never really pushed or rushed myself because there wasn't ever any goal in mind, it was just fun.  I started out using a plastic ball, so I wasn't ever worried about throwing the ball very hard, just about rolling it nice and easy.  Never worried about score because it's fun just being able to make it look like you know what you're doing.

Why would you ever want to throw a ball right handed?  --  JohnP

I am in the exact same boat.  Hurt my right wrist and battled with it for a while.  Took 6 months off by Doctor's order, but my wrist still hurts for a week after just a few games.  At this point I can have surgery to fix it, which isn't a guarantee, quit bowling or bowl left handed.  I chose the left handed option.  The first 20 or so games were rough, but there has been consistent improvement ever since.  Now that I am ~100 games in, it almost feels natural to throw it lefty.

Don't really see much of a drop off.  I know that feeling.  I messed up my wrist back in 2011 trying to crank up the revs and switched to my left then.  Wasn't as smooth at the start, but my left arm is all muscle, where my right had developed a delicate touch (31 years of bowling will do that).  Currently averaging in the 180s and have shot my highest set (744 on very suspect lanes).  Keep at it, man.  You'll be back to form in no time.
