Toughest House??
« on: April 16, 2010, 04:52:31 AM »
What is the Toughest house in your area?

Rusch's Lanes Kimberly WI. Old oiler that has just about had it. Old wooden lanes and a owner that would rather see bowlers suffer to shot deuce. Place is Nasty especially for a crankers and guys who like to get deep. THS plays flatter than most with ugly hang outside of 7. Carry is nonexistent and pins move like they are made out of lead.

Presidio bowl in SF is guaranteed to knock anyone's average down 20 pins.  There is a whole list of reasons why.  It was the bowling alley for the Military Base before it became a Federal Park.

Its take your pick in my city, we have two to choose from.

1. High point bowling center: Full brunswick synthetic, with less than par lane maintenence, much less center maintenence. It has carpet throughout the center, and i couldnt tell you how many times ive stepped in something just from walking from the bowling area to the tables right beside the area. Lanes arent properly stripped most days, so the shot is very inconsistent, you might get lined up and shoot 260 plus, but when you have to move, you'll more than likely be in the 160's lol.

2. Tarheel Lanes: old brunswick center from the late 70's early 80's with Gaurdian overlay, all i can say is be prepared to move left, and fast throughout the night.

BowlingElf: This is scary. I was just thinking about Ventura Lanes and about to post it, but you beat me to the punch.

Nice description.

In my state (Alabama)...

1) Leland Lanes, Tuscaloosa
2) Monroe Lanes, Monroeville
3) Scottsboro Lanes, Scottsboro

Not entirely sure the last two are still open. Florida Lanes in Mobile isn''t the easiest in the world, either (unless changes have been made recently). Same deal with Super Bowl north of Birmingham.

Leland is 40-year-old wood, beat-up heads, deep flat gutters, tough oil patterns and dead sideboards. Monroe Lanes is 50-60-year-old wood, above-ground gutters and a couple of lanes have poles or walls too close to the action. Scottsboro is some old Brunswick synthetic, dead pins, dead sideboards, inconsistent oil patterns and if it''s raining, it floods under the lane beds on the left side of the house.

Sparta lanes in Sparta, MI... if it is fresh it is playable, and you can score no issues... but it is very rarely fresh and with the old worn wood lanes and lack of oil volume the heads become unbelievably burnt up... plastic could probably roll out before the arrows

until a couple of years ago i would have said colonial lanes in iowa city.  there was usually an OB outside of 8 or so.  averaging 200 meant something there.  miss outside didn't necessarily result in gutters, but i saw an awful lot of 2 counts (4-8 for lefties, 6-9 for righties).  210 usually was the high average in the house, a couple of 300's each year, only 1 800 over the course of 8 or 9 yrs...now the shot is about as easy as cedar rapids and davenport etc...had 11 300's and 3 800's this year, as well as some near misses (even from me..lol).

I bowled there for a softball fund raiser back in late feb or early march and the lanes were pretty play-able..  but i was also playing 5th arrow with my Invasion and killin the pocket...  the backends did FLY lol..

my nightmare of a house was always the bowling alley in Douglas, Michigan "lakeview lanes"   I'm not saying its a hole or anything i just always found the shot tough, and it only had 8 lanes, but had leagues every nite of the week.
only because the ball returns are big so you could only get so far left, and the carry was tough..  and GOD forbid you get stuck on lanes 1-2, you had a wall that went from the gutter to the back of the approach..
Several times for the city tournament the oiler would break down and you got stuck with a good Chef's surprise..   Urethane or plastic would be a good option for this house, the wood lanes do hook ALOT.
It seemed that the play-able shot was outside of 10 with a very weak ball...  but even using a weak ball would hook early.

AMF Mowry Lanes in Fremont, CA.  Really bad wood, horrible approaches, break point that changes after every thrown shot.  Only one 200 average in the entire house, everyone is down a minimum of 20 pins.  Those of us who bowl there are saying that this should be one of the PBA patterns except for the fact that it could not be duplicated each week only because no one knows from hour to hour what the pattern looks like.  It could become like the center in San Francisco, a haven for bay area baggers.

Hey David

Lakeview lanes is now synthetic. It is pretty playable. Although the carry is still a little crazy. The city tournament was there last year, doubles and singles anyway.  I think 740 was the singles winner.

They must have set them up for you guys! I don't bowl a league there so it is probably much better on fresh, but I have rarely been in there where they were playable, the back ends on a few occasions are decent but rarely will the ball even get that far... and I regularly play left of the 5th with very weak equipment there

I live in Sparta right next to the alley but because I have never had a good experience bowling there won't bowl a league there anytime soon...

In Northern Virginia, it is US Bowling in Alexandria.  They use a Kegel Phoenix oil machine that is not maintained well, which translates to extreme inconsistent shot. A THS does not exist in this house. You are guaranteed to average 10 pins below your true average.  It's great for training for tournaments, brutal during league.  This is the one house where I needed to bring almost every ball that I currently own (4+) to cover any extreme condition that may be put on the lanes.
