Tournament dilemma

I'm having a tournament dilemma. There is an upcoming tournament that I'm entering, but I'm not sure which division I want to compete in. Scratch or Handicap (90% of 225)? Its 10 games across 10 lanes and non-sanctioned $50 entry. I'm currently carrying a 187 average, and I'm pretty confident in my game.


I just don't know which one?

assuming your 187 is on THS...

No offense, but that means your not good at spares or have a real bad fisrt ball.

I would stick to handicap. 10 games is a lot and if the shot is tougher than what your use to, you will have a tough time. your hadicap gives you a better shot at cash.

even 200+ guy on THS have a tough time in 10 games. every pin counts.

if your never done one of these they are fun. they test your focus.

don't forget to post back with results. my first 8 gamer this year I was - 370 or so. the second one I was -191. the next time I go I will be plus. I have no doubt about it

Enter the handicap side. Then proceed to shoot enough that if you had entered scratch, you'd win it too.
Then you'll know what to do next time.

Seriously - if you're 38 pins off the cap for handicap, go for the handicap. You'll probably get killed in the scratch division.

Yeah, my average is on a THS. I guess I was overlooking those extra pins... I have a very good strike shot, and have improved my spare percentage. In fact, I haven't missed a 10 pin in 3 weeks, but seem to be having a problem with 7's. Since I went all Dyno-Thane, I haven't shot under a 600 in 5 weeks. BTW, I do use plastic for spares.

This tournament is at a house that I normally score very high at; I've shot some of my highest games there.

This will be my first tournament as a ABC member!

Yeah, I think I'll stay with the Handicap side then... It would be nice to take a run with the big boys, but I might get killed!

I entered a 10 game tournament two weeks ago and while the shot was brutal, I still finished third in the scratch division at plus 77 - I should have won, (plus 143 won) but I shot a 161 my last game

Anyway, the handicap side of the tournament was very unfair in that the top 5 finishers were all plus 350 or more after adding in their 700-850 pin handicaps.  So I think it depends on the type of bowlers in the handicap side.

OK, first of all, I am assuming you are right handed.   Now, that being the case, if you bowl on THS, then I don't know how you can miss a 7 pin.  

The 4 and 7 are the easiest of spares on league/house conditions, UNLESS you are throwing a plastic ball at them.  

If you can hit second arrow then you can make a 7.   Move right off of your strike ball, hit second arrow, with normal release, and the ball will hook right over to it, and knock it down.  

I see way to many people tring to throw plastic at left side spares on THS.   There is no need.   Pros do it on tough conditions, they have to, the shot is unpredictable.    THS is not.

This is the strange thing, I NEVER miss a 7 with plastic, only with my strike ball. I do stand right and hit the second arrow, but I seem to come behind the pin.

This last week was the first 7 pin I've missed in months. What I meant to say was, I have been leaving a lot of 7's lately. I must have had a brain lapse when writing that post......Sorry!

My spare release is close to Walter Ray's, I intentionally roll over the thumb hole to keep it nice and straight.

I also got to thinking about it, and I don't think I could've kept up with the scratch bowlers. At least I know they have a max of 65 pins allowed and I get spotted 34 (187 avg -- 90% of 225).
