buying a used ball... Which would you rather have...
« on: October 04, 2011, 03:55:09 AM »
I was just wandering if anyone on here has a preference on buying used balls.

Would you rather buy a used ball that's completely drilled  and just shop around for one that's close to your own specs (span, layout)?  Or Would you more likely buy a used ball that has had only the thumb hole plugged so you don't need to worry about the span at all only where the pin lies?

Also would you more than likely pay more for the plugged thumb ball or the fully drilled ball?   Either way how you would approach it??

you can email me at gr8_bwler@yahoo.com

100+ hits, no re:?
I buy mostly used equipment.
The Lefty I buy from is 4" (approx.) both fingers.
I don't care if the balls are plugged or not.
I normally re-slug the thumb ... sometimes, I re-plug the whole ball.
Our PAPs are totally different...he tracks 2" from the grip or so.
Don't know his PAP... My PAP is 5-1/4 1/8" down...
I sell a few used balls, about 600 in the past 5 years.
I used to have buyers, ask for re-plugging...haven't had anyone ask in the past 2 years or so.

I occaisionally buy used equipment, but only if the span is close and the layout is what I am looking for. I would rather get the ball without any plugwork prior to the purchase. I do my own plug/redrill, plus if I am basically redrilling in the same place, I don't have to sand the labels off trying to get the ball round again.

I don't use grips, so the existing drilling/span is irrelevant to me.  I try to avoid drillings that might leave plug work in my track, but I've done it before with no adverse effects.  I'm going to have the ball completely plugged by my pro shop, so if something happens, they will take care of it.

I look for balls that have layouts that are similar to what i'd have if i'd bought the ball new. That also keeps the re-fit costs down as the thumb would be the only hole to move.

personally i would rather take a ball thats drilled for two reasons when i worked in a pro shop it cost 30 to plug and redrill vs 45to drill a blank ball and under that rule a fully plugged ball was considered a blank ball i know several shops that still follow this idea. the second is i dont know how well a person who plugged the ball did so i would rather have someone i trust plug the ball knowing they are going to get it done good.

Duke,

You should get used stuff off of Jim Scott. He has enough. Heck, judging from your description, you may be getting use stuff from him as is!

After bowling a tournament this weekend I realize the best ball I purchased was a new ball because I told the proshop the pin length and top weight I wanted..  Its better to get a customized ball ver someone else specs...
