Tournament Interest
« on: December 15, 2003, 08:15:19 AM »
I was looking to see if there would be any interest from here for either kind fo these tournaments.
The first is a 12 game marathon which we have had about once a yer but not sure yet this year because of lack of support  handicapped but with optional doubles, sidepots, and scratch, high games bout everything.

The main one i was interested in though we has it for a couple years and would advertise it as the iron mans tournament.  It was a 24 game marathon bowl 12 take half hour break to reoil and shoot another 12 the same day.  It could have been big but not advertised well.  I was curious if there would be any support from the board for either of these tournaments

These would be in the southern illinois region and i believe that Srkegler and a few others were here last year not for this tournament but for some others

I am a definite fan of the marathon tournaments...the longer, the better.  If there is anything like this in the Illinois area, I would definitely make the trek.

Here’s my thoughts on a 24 game marathon.  Lineage pulls so much out of the prize fund that entry fees have to be raised just to have a decent payout.  24 games also just proves who is the strongest, no necessarily who was the best that day.

Your area is a little unique in that its about 50 miles to the nearest recreational facility.  Not too much to do in Albion except bowl, drink and park.

Instead of trying to come up with an occasional gimmick (marathons, etc), I think you would be better off trying to start a monthly tournament, have it the same weekend each month, same general format.  Talk to the bowlers.  Find out what they didn’t like about the tournament, make valid changes as necessary.

Don’t expect miracles and to fill the house 1st week out.  Bowlers know the good tournaments and will bring buddies to the next one.

One thing I would try is having tournaments on Saturday.  Most of the tournaments are run on Sundays, should give you a larger pool to draw from.

You can goto the MAPL Albion pumping station, Been there.
I wouldn't mind doing something like that even though I am from Oh.

SrK - I agree with everything you stated except this.  Whoever has the highest score at the end of the day is still the "best" that day, regardless of how many games are thrown.  Why shouldn't physical conditioning be a part of a marathon tournament?  Any other sport, physical conditioning is almost required, not scoffed at.  Just my opinion, but again, you are right on everything else.

Persoanlly, I'd like to try a 24 game marathon just for my own amusement, but I think shorter game blocks would bring more entries - probably no more than 9-12 games.  Good Luck!

Good points 9&wiggle:

As usual, I was just considering my chances in a 24 game marathon.  I weigh about 120 lbs depending on how heavy a ball I’m using.  Imagine how dry the lanes are going to be games 6-12 each set.

If you’ve bowled 2d shift leagues, you know how dry the lanes can get.  In this case we’re bowling 3rd & 4th set leagues.  Skill and accuracy don’t matter those last few games, its just who can throw the hardest and overpower the condition.

OK everyone who would be interested in a 12 game marathon here would anyone come.  and SrKegler they tried that and we had a max of 2 entries thats why these kinds of tournaments can bring bowlers in from farther around.  and the 24 games we use to charge 90 but that would be raised a little more since lineage has went up

I would come back over for a 12 game SCRATCH tournament.  December, Feb, Mar & Jun is booked up though.  Any other dates would be fine.

I would meander the 25 miles south for a 12 game marathon again, but I don't think my old bones could stand 24.  If you come up with any other formats, keep me in mind.
