Thumb sizes
« on: May 09, 2009, 12:10:55 PM »
I have an issue with my thumb getting bigger and bigger. It seems like about one or two times a month, I am havinh to make my thumb hole bigger, because my thumb keeps getting bigger. I know that it has to do with bowling because my non-bowling hands thumb is very small compared to the other. Does anyone know what is causing this??

Friction?  Either the fit/pitch is incorrect or you are bending your thumb or squeezing with it.

From the way you said you had to keep making the thumbhole bigger, I assume you are doing that yourself?  Getting any calluses anywhere on your thumb?  Check the fit with your driller and if it's good, make sure you are not bending the thumb.

PS your thumbhole should probably be oval rather than round.  Round thumbhole may encourage more bending or squeezing because while it may fit from side to side, it may be loose from back to front and you will have to use tape/Magic Carpet to make a snugger fit, but I am not a driller/fitter, so go see yours and talk to him/her.

Semi hijack. Im also having this problem, but my thumb doesnt "grow" any more. But it swells when im bowling a lot of games. I have bigg calluses, my thumb looks almost identical to this one: http://www.jayhawkbowling.com/Pro_s_Corner/Fitting_Tips/fig10a.jpg
The right spot, is where i get sore and often get blisters, is this a pitching problem?

I'm with MI2AZ.  Could really be a number of things.  When I was bowling A LOT, I had to sand down the callous on my thumb, it just got really thick.  I used sandpaper or an emory board to keep it smooth.

Weight, salt, temperature, humidity, hydration, can all be factors that make you hands swell.  I would bet blood pressure could be a factor, although don't quote me on that one.

Get your grip checked, your hand may have changed, and will change over time.

Could be pitch, but I would be willing to bet hole shape.  You are getting friction on both sides of your thumb.  When bowling many games, your thumb puffs up, that's natural your body protecting itself.  The hole doesn't get any bigger during said puffing, causing even more friction and pressure, hence the blisters.  I would say get your thumb holes "milled" a little more oval.  This is a drilled oval hole that is very custom.  Should help you.

Thx for your reply. I use sandpaper to oval my thumb hole. Its very oval, but snugg enough for me when im just starting to bowl. The problem is that i cant add tape on the side of my hole, since they only have white textured tape at my pro shop.
Could vise grips replaceable thumb slug be a solution?
