Tournament strategy
« on: January 15, 2013, 12:31:57 PM »
Hi guys!  I heard of an a sweet tournament coming up this weekend in South Carolina.  Format is 10 games total pins on 2 oil patterns, 35 feet one one lane and 47 feet on the other.  The catch, you only can use 2 balls and a spare ball for spares only the entire tournament.  Practice you are allowed to throw anything in the bag but ones scores starts you get to pick your 2 balls and a spare ball for spares only if you choose to use one.  Payout is 1:5 so and is run by a guy whom I've bowled tournaments run by him before and he does a real good job.

Anyone got an ideas how to attack it?  With the short pattern obviously playing farthest to the right and up the back is most optimal but we'll see how it goes.  I'm more worried about the amount of surface on my equipment on the long pattern.  I was thinking to try and stay away from super grits b/c i would think after a few games it would be unusable.  I'm thinking strong/medium strong symetrics @ 2000 and try to stay slow enough to hopefully survive the first couple of games till they open up.  The short pattern should be ok as long as I keep the ball speed up.

What would you guys do to gameplan?

Length is only a part of the pattern... what are the volumes going to be like?

Got no clue on the volumes.  I've bowled in the house before, AMF HPL's, at least they used to be.  Sometimes, the outside part of the lane hooks regardless of the length.  I've bowled RBT's on 45 feet there and played the 4 board.  So maybe could play there too, as for volume, I have no idea.

Use something medium. The other guys are going to be blowing a hole in the long pattern because they're going to see 47 feet and freak out. There's going to be Scotch Brite and charcoal in great amounts. Use something with medium diff, medium RG, and 2000 grit doesn't sound like a bad idea. That way, when a hole blows open (and it will, trust me), you will be able to stay out of trouble.

Unless on left!  All that strategy out the window.  It is what it is!

BY the way anyone see how much ball Jason Belmonte using on show this weekend.

Did he accidently find a FTL shot on the right?  Something different there?

What's the definition of spare ball?  Kind of opens up the strategy.  If you can use a weak ball, or urethane you could use that as you short shot ball, and use the other two balls for the longer pattern.  One dull to open it up and a medium for when it open up.  Even if it has to be plastic, you could use that on the short pattern.  And like other people have posted, volume and distribution of oil make a big difference.

If I read the rules right, you could only use the spare ball on spares?

"Practice you are allowed to throw anything in the bag but ones scores starts you get to pick your 2 balls and a spare ball for spares only if you choose to use one."

That's what I see there.

yeah according to the rules you only get 2 balls to possibly use as strike balls and can have an optiona
3rd to only shoot spares at if you choose.

That looks right.  I should have read it over more carefully.

It doesn't say how many on a lane, or if you have to move.  That would effect my decision.

Usually you have to move, but if you don't, then how do they assign lanes?  Can you and your friends camp out on one lane with the same strategy?

10 games is a lot of games, and if you have a lot of guys on each lane, it is going to get toasty in places.

no lol we have to skip a pair to the right after every game if its run similar to his past tournmanets. as far as i know lane assignment is random and the house has 40 lanes. i would assume with normal entries there would be 6 or maybe 8 at most to a pair

Did you say 47 feet.... OMG.... NABI depending on the volume.... I would suggest this --- Find a ball you dont like and sand it until your reach 200 grit and make you a line during practice on the 47 feet...  Then use a medium oil ball that you trust on carry down...

On the short pattern I would get something long and didnt jump but arc because 10 games is allot of games..  Can you say Toast... You need a ball that goes through the heads without problems and arcs...

this would be my thought of attack.....

short pattern..   medium ball with control drilling and some surface, to control the backend...

long pattern..  medium to heavy ball .. and a lot of surface to start..like 1000.. the ball will polish up after a game or so..  So when the lane does burn up / open up your ball will still be able to get down the lane.

Now on the flip side.. when the long pattern blows up you could possibly use your short oil ball too, once you get some hook on the lanes..
