Let's say you bowl a tournament where you aren't allowed to warm up a game or two before squad times and you have 2 practice balls on each lane (not 2 full practice frames). Not being aware of what the tournament pattern will be like, what type of ball would you pull out and where would you start playing to see if you can find a decent strike line by the end of your 4 balls?

I'm not saying it happens to me much, but it did happen earlier in my tournament season, and although I picked out the right ball, I didn't feel like I was up to the higher ball speed early in the first squad I bowled necessary to compete effectively (despite 15 minutes of stretching/ limbering up before the squad).

I have bowled in some tourneys that are like that. Never really understood the reasoning behind it. But to answer your question, unless you are bowling the very first shift, go early, watch the early shift bowl. Pick out someone that is similiar to your style and observe what they are throwing, angle of attack, revs and speed.

If I were bowling the first shift in this situation, I would throw my medium reaction ball first and adjust up or down from there from an angle that I am most comfortable with first.

i throw a med oil ball drilled smooth. IF it hooks up to soon then i need something to go longer...if it dosent do nothing i switch to a stronger ball.

Then if im not finding anything i watch someone who is like me in somesort of way and throw where their ball is breaking...

I throw one weak resin up the boards and try to swing the lane the next ball with a particle pearl/strong resin. This gives me an idea of the oil pattern and other factors, also looking at what other bowlers balls are doing helps.

I personally hate these formats, as it seems like whoever gets lucky enough to pick the right ball and line wins, not whoever has the most skill on that day. I think 4 balls on each lane should be preferred, and let the bowlers come in early and have 4 practice lanes set up with a different pattern for them to loosen their arms, maybe only allow 5 balls or so.

Pennsylvania mens State tourny is like that. Two balls on each lane. What kinda crap is that. You pay the entry fee and you can't even get enough throws to practice, let alone warm up. I need at least 10 throws just to get my thumb comfortable in the ball.  Somewhere after my fifth ball is when I start to look at lines.
Anyways, find a local who bowls the house and ask how they play there. that helped me last year. The local said they play outside, down and in, it's not my prefered shot but I threw the line my second game after trying to play my normal line. Ended up with almost 700.

A lot of people (including myself) have what they call "first ball out of my bag" and that is the first ball I would throw unless you see something about the lanes that you doubt that particular ball will work.

Usually i throw my the ball i can read the lanes best with. suually my medium lane ball and then i can adjust from there fairly quickly.

I, also, use the first ball out of the bag method.  Usually, I can get a good read of the lanes with one or two shots.  Then, I decide whether to adjust feet/target or switch balls.
