Spinner

OK, I'm a sucker ...

That said, my husband would very much like a ball spinner for Christmas, so I'm asking advice.  I've looked at the Vertex, Donkee and Innovative, and would like some feedback on the pros and cons of each.  Also, what accessories should I consider buying for it?  Has anyone bought the instruction video that Innovative offers?  If so, is it really helpful or just another way to suck 10 bucks out of my pocket?  All productive input appreciated!

every pro shop i've been in has an innovative, but most home spinners are vertexs. Reason being obviously is cost. Donkees are renowned for in some instances shaking.

You will probably want to buy some scotch brite pads (local automotive store) get some burgandy, green, light grey, and blue.

also get some fine sandpaper, say 1200 or 1500, also at automotive store.

if he wants to resurface balls, im pretty sure he can do a light resurface with a spinner and some lower grit sandpaper, but don't quote me on this

and finally, to polishes. There are pluses and negatives to every system of polishing out there. I personally prefer tracks line of polishes, and for high gloss jobs, storms diamond gloss (discontinued and might be a little hard to find). a lot of proshops i have been to use storm polishes also, and they work just as well, i just find that tracks are a little easier to understand. if he doesnt have it already, get him some simple green. he can use a 50/50 mix of simple green and water and it will clean his balls up nicely.

also might want to think about some micro fiber towels (kmart, walmart target have them around a dollar a peare), he will probably need a spray bottle if he doesnt have one because he always will want to sand the ball when it is wet (keeps dust down). hope this helps!

I have a Jayhawk at home. (Ebay purchase)
Pretty good if the price is right.

I have the cheaper Vertex spinner at home. While it doesn't have the power or perhaps the durability for everyday use in the proshop, for once a week use in the home it is great. I'd get a complete set of scotch brite pads and a bottle of black magic polish. Also, be aware that a spinner is messy. Get a splash guard unless the spinner is in an area you don't care if there are many splash marks on the wall.

Thanks to all of you for the great information!  I'm making a list of all the stuff he'll need.  I hope he doesn't mind a box of sandpaper, a box of scotchbrites, a box of polishes, etc., as companion gifts under the tree!  Well, at least it won't be a socks and underwear year.  Anything else I should know before I make a purchase?

I have a Innovative an it works great. I also bought a plastic clear rectangular tub with top at Garden Ridge for about $5.oo. The spinner fits perfectly in it. I turn the top upside down and use it to put all the polishes and rags in it when not in use. It sets on top of the tub upside down nicely,..just take it off and away we go. I also went to Walmart and bought a TV cart for about $25 with wheels and a shelf in the middle. Put the spinner and tub on top, and it rolls in out of the spare bedroom closet in seconds...The inside of the plastic wipes off easily, and the TV cart has plenty of storage for extra stuff...jim

Innovative Spinners are good spinners for heavy use such as Pro Shops...However for the normal bowler that does their own balls, the Vertex is excellent plus it's quality and price are likewise. On people that have Donkeys, some support the Donkey's while others complain about their shaking and vibrating badly. You won't see this shaking and vibrating in a Vertex. You won't even have to bolt it down like some people have to do with Donkeys. Here is the Vertex link.

We've had 2 or 3 Donkee's in the last couple of years.  We're very hard on them and they do vibrate unless anchored.  Once they are anchored they work a lot better.  Ours doesn't move at all.  I think we bolted it into the concrete floor this time.  Wasn't there when it arrived.

I have an innovative. I bought it used from a fellow BR member a while ago. I love it.
It came with a splash guard, which was ok, but not great. Putting it in the rubbermaid bin has taken care of most of the splash problem, and has made it a lot more portable.

I keep a bunch of polishes/cleaners handy, as well as plenty of microfiber towels, a spray bottle of water, and AN APRON.

I have had a Vertex for a little over a year now and I think it's great!  It has minimal shaking when the core is in the most unstable position.  Definitely no need for bolting it down.  Like jimensminger, I bought an inexpensive tub (at Target from the clearance section after last Christmas) which does a great job of containing the splatter and storing the spinner and supplies.  Also, I will second the recommendations for scotch brite, microfiber towels from WalMart (label should say ??% polyamide if I recall correctly) and Track polishes.  Simple Green and Isopropyl alcohol (3 to 1) works great for cleaning.  I would also recommend getting at least one CAB (contour abrasion block) to hold the scotch brite, towel, etc.  They can be purchased from pro shops and bowling web sites.

Oh yeah, I just remembered something else.  To keep the splatter to a minimum when wet sanding, I dip the scotch brite in water and then put it on a small washcloth and then put them both on the CAB.  That way I am still wet sanding but the washcloth catches almost all of the "wet".

Also, instead of scotch brite, you can get the sanding discs that work with the CAB.
