track on ball has moved
« on: June 05, 2008, 02:13:49 AM »
Is it possible for the the track marks on my ball to move or shift. At first i was tracking high (track was just to the left of of the middle finger and about 2" left of the thumb). I'm a right handed bowler. Now the track has moved significantly to the right. The new track has moved over the ring finger and about 3" to the right of my thumb.

One reason I'm concerned about this is that i bought the ball when i was just learning to throw a hook and this may be a result of the way the ball was drilled when i was just a beginning bowler. The other reason I'm concerned is b/c the ball is definitely not performing as it was 5 to 6 months after i purchased it. I personally think that my PAP has changed and i should buy a new ball and have my PAP relocated to fit my new bowling technique. Or it could be just bad technique overall.

With the old track i was averaging around 170 to 188. Now it just seems that the ball just squirts down the lane until the lanes start to dry up. Now I'm averaging around 150 to 165.

Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.

Yes, the track/PAP can move over time, and this can cause big trouble concerning ball drillings - especially when you have a strong pin position (3 3/8"), a PAP shift can totally ruin the ball recation because the ball migrates to a different PSA - even on strong MB balls. It can, for example, rotate around the pin axis, not the MB axis that is 90° to it. The ball reaction can be weird - a friend of mine "suffered" from this recently, his track moved down from about 5" over and +/-0 to 4" over and +/-0.

I recognized the weak back end and poor finish of his strong equipment, including a NM, BWS, Domination, LevRG, so we did some PAP measurement and taped the balls' relevant axis' to see what happened. And - through the lower track/higher PAP position - some of these balls with a pretty strong drilling migrated towards the pin axis!

After consulting our pro shop of trust, the only solutions had been plugging and re-drilling, or punch up new equipment. balance hole tricks would not be enough anymore.
Luckily, some balls still "behaved" well (those with a weaker and high pin position), but the NM had to be sold, the LevRG with low mileage went into the basement for better times and a new Cell with an adjusted drilling came along - and this ball (which is an amazing piece, BTW) finally behaved again as it was supposed to.

Track movement can be a serious thing. Better check your drillings and axis migration

And you say that your track has now moved to the RIGHT of your thumb and over your RING finger, even though you're a right handed bowler?  Talk to a coach.  (Check bowl.com for a list of USBC-certified coaches in your area if you don't know one)  Your release has definately changed, and I'd venture to say in a way that's not for the better if that's where you are tracking.
