why dont they make sanded balls out of the box anymore?
« on: December 06, 2011, 10:16:52 AM »
i remember having a few sanded balls. such as the ebonite wave and the vortex. these balls were so smooth out of the box. you could easily take light sandpaper to them and it wouldnt scuff them up. i havent seen one new like that in probably 13 years. anyone know why they stopped making these out of the box? or do they still and i am overlooking something?

Usually the old urethane balls like the Black U-Dot and the Old hammer line.  With the technology now as well as the lane conditioners being used, sanded equipment is not needed anymore unless you want to blow up a lane faster.  With the coverstocks being produced to 'soak' up the conditioner, sanded isnt necessary.

Why not sanded. Marketing. Shinny sells better. I think that is the bottom line. If you want surface, easy enough to add it using Abralon pads or similar. The NEAT pads can add surface but with a smoother appearance. No reason for the ball company to loose sales when bowlers can tweak the cover easy or have a pro shop do it for them.

to splitcity   When new technology balls roll down the lanes, they soak up the oil instead of pushing it down the lanes to to the outside of the lanes.  The dry area on the lanes this cases, is sometimes referred to as burnt, torched, or blown up.  This because that portion of the lane in no longer useable for a consistent shot.  It is like trying to bowl on the approach.  No matter what type of ball you use it will hook in that area.

Most of your aggressive super soakers come sanded still. They aren't the 500-800 grit one directional sanded your use to but that is because of the new pads and systems they use for surfaces on bowling balls. The other part is I believe the aggressiveness of the covers they have to put a little something on them to get the best desired results for the most people in box finish.

Many bowling balls come at a 500-800 grit finish with a little polish to take the edge off and it seems to work really well. My favorite recently is the Wicked Siege. 500 grit with a little polish. Rolls amazing.

Nano Marvel, Ransom Demand, Mission X, Benchmark, Lethal Revolver, Nexus solid, Taboo, Victory
Road Solid, Arson, OutBurst, Critical Theory just to name a few all have a dull finish out of the Box...

Most are sanded from 2000-a 4000 Abralon Pad finish...

Now I do agree that polished balls look better on the shelf...But the Nano, Taboo, Mission x, and the
new Nexus solid have sold very well...

Beyond the advance in coverstock friction which reduces the need for a sanded surface as mechanical extra traction and the shelf appeal of glossy balls it is IMHO also the indirect call from bowlers for ever-sharper breakpoints. While an arcing ball is better to control on truly oily lanes, its hook shape is not spectacular - I suppose that's also the reason why "particle" is not advertised as such anymore. Arcing = boring. Snap = cool.

Just looked at the Roto site for an example.
Current sanded Roto balls:
Defiant,
Theory,
Critical Theory,
Outlaw,
Shooting Star,
Grenade.

That is actually 50% of their current line including spare balls....

I dont follow this part of your post, it doesnt sound worded right.
"i remember having a few sanded balls. such as the  ebonite wave and the vortex. these balls were so smooth out of the box.  you could easily take light sandpaper to them and it wouldnt scuff them  up."

You say at first you have a sanded (meaning a dull, coarse grit surface?) ball, but then you say its so smooth out of the box.
If its smooth out of the box then its not sanded (at least not a coarse grit), its either polished or a fine grit surface.

and then theres the
you could easily take light sandpaper to them and it wouldnt scuff them  up.
I can see if  you wanted a duller surface than what the ball had you might need to scuff it. So are you saying here the coverstocks back then were so hard the sandpaper wouldn't dull it?
and why would you use a light sandpaper on a sanded ball? i can see it on a polished ball or a fine grit surface.

If you used light paper on a sanded  ball yes it wouldn't scuff it. It would be smoothing/polishing the ball not making it duller.

I'm pretty sure he did not mean smooth feeling, but smooth reacting because they were so rough. They were so rough that they hooked at your feet and produced more of a curve, than a hook.
