Title: Track wear vs track wearing out question?
Post by: Nicanor on May 11, 2003, 07:34:23 PM
Some bowling balls are said to need a little tracking or wearing in before the ball lives up to its potential, but how long before being tracked in turns into tracked out and needs resurfacing?  I know that all balls have different amount of track in and track out ime depending on the hardnest of the coverstock, but some balls are barely getting tracked in before they're tracked out.

What do you think?

I'm surprised no one responded to this post, especially those that talked about the Lane 1 wearing/tracking out so quickly.

I think most people get hung up on appearance before the ball performance is effected very much.

Resin balls seem to track up quicker than particle.

I generally use a ball until it quits carrying the same. That is generally in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 games. At that point I will resurface the ball and they will come back to near new performance. I have done this up to 4 times on a ball. I have known bowlers who have resurfaced up to 6 times.

Nic, there are huge differences.  Stock storm stuff prior to the x-Factor was best out of the box and then went steadily downhill for me.  The X-Factor, like much Track equipment (Voodoo, Hex, EZ Money, Mojo, Freak Out, Threat, Hextreme), needed seasoning to become consistent.  Unfortunately, in the vein you note, some Track equipment (the Freak Out and Threat come to mind) need a few games to break in and then track out (need resurfacings with dull scotchbrite, not sandpaper) after about 25-40 games, or they lose punch, at least for me, so you get maybe 20-30 games out of them effectively before they need resurfacing.
