tracked out?
« on: October 11, 2004, 02:17:22 AM »
i just got my ultimate inferno and i threw it on pretty eratic lanes, i mean really messy from a lot of open play. anyway after it came back there was at least 7-8 inches of this track engraved in it not oil marks but permanent. i believe this is called "tracking out", is it not? is this a bad thing or does it make no difference at all?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 7-8" of track engraved...  Can you rephrase it?

Anyway, on older wood lanes, you can develop a track very quick.  It looks like a series of scratches about an inch wide that runs around the ball.  If you are a normal, 3/4 roller, it should be roughly 1" from your fingers and thumb, and more or less parallel to your thumb and finger holes.  A mild track will just make the ball hook a little earlier and reduce the backend snap because where the ball is rolling is dull.  The heavier the track, the more pronounced the difference will be.  The more scratched up it is, the more oil it will absorb, which can reduce the life of the ball.  A mild track isn't a big deal, but the heavier the track, the more likely you are to need a resurface.

By the way, throwing a heavy oil ball on less than heavy oil will wear it out faster.  Soft covers, big hooking resins, and particles tend to wear out quickly anyway.  If you face drier conditions regularly, throw a milder ball, or put some polish on your Ultimate Inferno.

I probably wouldn’t call it tracked out.

I’ve seen balls that have been thrown on a very dry condition develop a “glazed” area where the track is. I have always been able to polish the “glaze” off.

If this is this case then polishing the ball or hitting it with scotch brite pad will remove it.
