Sandbagging?
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:14:52 AM »
I average around 240 or above the last two years on THS and next year I am only bowl a PBA X league and mixed doubles with my wife. My question is if I decided to only use urethane for my mixed league would you consider that sandbagging?

Best way to alleviate is to always make sure they do rerate you properly....then you are covered an you know, in the end, it wasn't handicap or anything else that got you past someone....it was your bowling and skill.

Then they can refigure my PBA X league average like they do for others if it's a problem.

Understood.
But, since this will be your only regular league (non-PBAx), the average you finish with will become the basis for any other leagues entered the following year. If you decide to join a money (let's call it "serious") league, your 220 average will become the basis for your entry (whether it's a handicap league or a capped team entry scratch league). However, if you use resin in that new league, your average is likely to get back towards your true capability of 240 or so.

The problem arises if someone else learns your 220 average was shot with urethane, they may have a concern they'd bring  up before the league. You may have to tell them to use the 240 average from last year that you earned with resin.

(By the way, great bowling! 240, anywhere, on any condition is seriously good.)

FYI I wouldn't call it sandbagging, but, as I showed above, you have to be careful of the future.

I am fine with that, like I said I am not trying to get one over on anyone.

There is no rule keeping someone from using a ball in league. You can throw what ever you want. If you want to use a house ball in mix league...go right ahead. Anyone challenging you is going to lose. USBC has no rules to force you to throw a reactive ball over a urethane or plastic in league. I can''t imagine how that rule would be written or enforced. BALL POLICE???

Where are all the posters on here that state its the bowler not the ball.

In your question with Urethane. You might see a dip in average, but I think the challenge you are looking for would be to go to something like plastic. I bowled first half of a year with Urethane on a THS. My average was about the same as with reactive.

Always the last one to POST!

I would agree with this. The OP asked if using a urethane would be considered sandbagging. No it wouldn''t.

Here''s from the rules
Rule 17 – Grounds for Disciplinary Action
17a. Unfair Tactics
3. Establishing an average below the player’s ability to gain an unfair advantage in handicap or classified competition.

It says the player’s "ability" that would be your physical skills, not your ability to use different equipment. So as long as your bowling at the best of your ability your not sandbagging.
