Tracking over the thumbhole
« on: March 08, 2007, 02:52:40 PM »
Well I went into to practice with my coach today.  We had a really good session I feel, and really loosened up my swing to get my ball speed up.  We also worked on a few timing issues.  After working with my coach for about 45 minutes i had to go to work.  After work about 7 hours later i decided to toss a few more for about a half hour to keep working on what he taught me.  After the first few warmup balls i started to hear a cluncking noise going down the lane.  I looked at my track and it was clipping the thumb hole.  I normally have a lower track my PAP is 4 1/2 by 1/4.  THe only ball the would track over my thumb is my urethane ball that i like to practice with, and my plastic.  The rest of my reactives the track was higher by a great deal but not enough to roll over the thumb.
I am a tweener i throw the ball about 16 MPH and have about 275 RPMs.  The urethane ball the i was tracking over the thumb looked like this.

What is the diagnosis guys???

Everyone is going to want more info.
Whats your layout like? pinplacement etc.
Whats your style ?

Could be your release plus check your grip  and hole pitches.
A quick guess is you might be coming up the back of the ball to much.

I had the same issue... I wouldn't take my advice to heart but what I did was change my wrist position a little bit to where my index finger was pointing towards the pins and was under the ball.  My issue was that my wirst position was causing me to come up the back of the ball too much and I Was tracking extemely high and over the thumb.  Like I said I'm the last person to take advice from but it worked for me.

I think i might have something similar to you.  I went to practice today and I have never had an issus of tracking over my thumb, but, today when I practiced the lanes were bone dry and I decided to throw my plastic white dot for strikes.  well the white dot tracks over the thumb while the othe two balls I throw don't.  So since it's not my normal strike ball that was doing this I took it with a grain of salt and just had some fun while practicing.

Beside whats been already said.
Looking at your layout you should try a ball
with a pin placement more above the fingers.

See if someone has a ball you fit in with a pin above the fingers
and give it a try if you can. or if you got one you can plug and redrill.
see if it helps.

Try changing your release first to see if that helps.

My guess is that while trying to work on the things that you did during the lesson that you've changed something else to compensate, probably your release.  I know that if I play down and in I don't get near as much tilt on the ball as I do if I swing it.  And my track raises and clips my thumb hole.  It's just something mental that tells me to come more up the back of the ball when playing straighter.

I'd go back to your coach and have him try and spot what's changed.
