Is Top Weight Irrelevant?
« on: July 16, 2009, 09:26:14 AM »
Just wondering what others say about top weight. I prefer to have mine in the 3-3.5 range, but it seems everytime I get a ball it is in th 2- 2.5 range.

These days do these numbers really not matter anymore?

My Bounty Hunter came in and it had 3 inch pin with 2 1/4 top weight, I am going to use a high pin position, is this a top weight that is better for that kind of layout?

I know alot of people say weight statistics aren't worht bothering unless getting to legal limits.  Just curious on NIB top weight issue these days thats all.

Excessively high top weights can make some layouts a challenge to use with the antiquated static weight rules in place at the moment.

Low top weight can be troublesome as well at times, but generally anything between 2-4 oz. is quite manageable.

Hopefully, within the next year, the USBC drops that rule all together.

Go to the Lane1 forum and ask the buzzbomb people..........

In all seriousness though, I always seem to have much better looks with balls that have enought topweight before drilling that they still retain some of it after drilling.

2.5 to 3 oz should be plenty. Less might be a good option for moving the cg WAY over towards the VAL without having to drill a canyon sized x-hole.

In my experience statics make a difference just not as much as coverstock and weight block. With a high pin placement the TW will determine where and how deep finger holes and balance hole will be.

agree with notsohotshot....Higher top weight does create more length than low tops....although the difference is minimal. All depends on who wants to be on the tour and who wants to be a house bowler. If you take bowling very seriously and want advantages in your favor, keep top weights in mind before drilling. I say why not look at every possible aspect in drilling....Thats what we get paid for.

I understand that aspect, but all in all a ball driller is getting paid to do his-her best job. So I must say if you get the ball drilled by a pro shop operater, YES it should be taken into consideration even if its not going to be noticed...your paying for it.

The top weight just allows the ball to be close to balance after drilling the holes.  If after drilling you have too much top or bottom weight I would think the ball would lope down the lane or possibly hop if it was extreme.
