Just to get an opinion, when you trade with someone online who do you feel should be the one that ships the ball first? The person that that initiated the trade by looking for a specific ball or the person that answers the post and says they have the ball you are looking for?

I think it should be the person who replies to the post.

Compare it to simply purchasing something online. You agree on the price and shipping charges, then the BUYER sends the money. When the SELLER gets the money, they ship the merchandise. Same thing when trading.

If you're that worried, I think you're not at all comfortable with the deal and the other person. When I did my first ball exchange, I was kind of worried; then I figured -
Hey, if I trust him, I trust him; If I don't, I shouldn't do the deal. I shipped first, then when he got my balls (if was a multi-ball swap), he was surprised and admitted he wasn't sure about me and had been hesitating.
I'm not saying you should trust everyone; in fact, based on the number of problems reported here lately, I wonder about trusting almost anyone, but there's only so many precautions one can take in life. $50-100 lost is a painful experience but it's not the end of the world. If you've taken all the measures you can, made all the checks that are REASONABLE, take the plunge.
Don't be a fool, but life without some degree of trust is not worth living.

The balls should be shipped the SAME day with a tracking number mailed to each participant at that time.

That's exactly how I've run every one of my trades.
There's no reason one cant agree on a day to ship & do it at the same time. That way if a full day or so passes & I haven't heard from the other party, I can recall shipment if needed.

I have made several purchases, trades and sales with people online. I have no reason to distrust anyone at this point.
It was merely a question I came up with as a subject. I sure hope I never have to go through any of the problems others have encountered.

This has always seemed reasonable to me; it's how I manage ball deals and also how everyone from whom I've got a ball has done it.

Cash/check/money order for a ball is completely different than
a ball for ball trade that Excal was talking about, Rags.
Ball for ball trade requires trust.
Of course sending a money order to a seller requires trust based on knowledge, usually. That said, I am shocked how many people tell me they will send me the money (for balls and for used audio equipment, another hobby of mine) without knowing who I am. I couldn't do it without knowing something, no a lot of good things about the seller.

Do your homework on who you deal with. I also will think twice if they haven't put in a profile with some real info.

I only deal with people who post regularly in the misc section. While there are several reputable dealers who only post in the trade/sell forum, that was not the purpose of this site.
The regular posters seem more like family. I've only had one bad deal where USPS lost the shipment. Got a refund for the cost of the ball, but didn't get back the shipping charges. $15 wasn't worth complaining about.
With a little research, it isn't too hard to figure out who to deal with.
Back to the subject though, when I trade equipment, I send my ball out first. That gives them a chance to see if the ball is as described. If they are satisfied with the trade, they can then send me their ball.
On trades I figure the ball I'm sending is useless to me, I'm not really out anything while I wait for the trade to be completed.
