Dick Ritger's Bowling Camps?
« on: January 19, 2004, 07:43:26 AM »
Are they really as good as they seem? They make it seem like if your a 170 bowler, you'll go up to a 190 after the camp and if your a 200 bowler, you'll go to a 210.Just wondering if it's worth the time and money...

Mumzie will probably give you a more detailed benefits of "Ritger's" courses.

Bowling is a constantly learning game and coaching will shorten your learning time and point you away from pitfalls, no matter what your average is. Your game will improve and you'll enjoy the game more.

Well, I loved it, and ate it up. I've been to the basic clinic, and the special one time advanced clinic they had last feb.
I loved 'em both. Before I went to the basic clinic in 2001, I had a book average of 182, and had gotten myself around 189. 2002 I booked 198, and last year, 220. I owe it all to Bob Rea and the Ritger clinics.
However - you don't just go and expect magic overnight. It takes a lot of work and practice to incorporate everything you learn into your own game. but it is AWESOME!!!

If you have any specific questions, just ask. I'll be glad to answer any and all questions you might have.

The 4 step vs 5 step thing is ONLY FOR DRILLS during the camp.
This slight misinformation seems to pop up every time someone brings up the clinics.

And - they work with what you have. If you bend your elbow, you'll keep that when you leave the clinic. What you will take with you is a sense of HOW to do it the same every time.

If you have any other doubts about the system...
Has anyone heard of Kelly Kulick? She's a graduate of the Ritger camps, and now works for them as a coach as well.

Michelle Feldman? Anyone doubt she's her own person, with her own style???

I think the camp isn't the answer to everything, but it sure is a great start!

Of course, if you already know more than they do, don't waste the money.

There was a 3-step bowler in our Ritger clinic.  Bob Rea worked with him  but did not change his 3 step game.  He did all the drills seperately from the rest of us because he had to do them a bit differently.

They must have changed some things.  Two of my friends went to Ritger camps 5-6 years ago.  They made everyone do 4 step deliveries.  They said the info was good for 150-180 average bowlers, but they didn't get much out of it.  Mumzie has told us several times how happy she was with the program.  If it's as good as the people here make it sound, it's a great investment.

FWIW, I didn't attend a Ritger camp right after my frinds returned because of the 4 step thing.  When my timing was poor, I thought a 4 step appraoch might help me get it back.  I can't do 4 steps to save my life.

My wife and I attended a 4-day Ritger class a couple years ago here in Va.  Our instructor was Tony something.  I used a 5 step approach but switched to a 4 step during the class at their suggestion.  It took all of 20 minutes to get comfortable with it and haven't gone back to the 5 step.  I have been bowling for 30 years and it was difficult for me to break all my "bad" habits in 4 days but I was open to their suggestions.  My wife had only been bowling for 3 years and she got a LOT out of the classes.  I think the class was worthwhile and recommend it as long as you are open to changes.  We had a couple people in our class that refused to try it the Ritger way and questioned/doubted everything so they never showed any improvement during the class.  You have to go into it with an open mind.

BC - you hit it on the head.
In the basic clinic I attended, I think there were 7 attendees total. Of the other 6, not one incorporated what they learned to a permanent part of their game. One of them said at the end of the clinic that he felt it was a waste of time, because Bob suggested he change something. Mind you - even to my untrained eye, I could see the fatal flaw in that game. that's where my comment above came from - if you really think that you know more than they do, don't waste your money!
One couple applied what they learned for a couple of weeks, but mainly attended because their daughter was a pro, and since the daughter liked the clinic, she figured they would too.
One other couple - he applied what he learned for a little while, the wife decided she had too low of an average to really use what she learned (I disagree, but I digress...)
One gentleman was attending for his third time. He seemed to like the socialization of the clinic more than the instruction. Although he attended three times that I knew of, he said later that it didn't really help his game much.
After I attended the clinic, I started practicing every day. Sometimes at lunch, sometimes in the evening, before and/or after league. I found myself a practice partner who was a great complement to my game. I worked REALLY, REALLY hard. I've seen Bob several times since the clinic, and he is still pushing me to learn new things, because he knows I'm not wasting his time.

Several people I know have gone to the clinics on my recommendation. The unanimous thing that they say is that Bob makes bowling easy... Easy from the standpoint that you aren't exhausting yourself trying to throw the ball. He makes it much easier on your body. I went from struggling to get through 6 games to breezing through 12 in a regional.

Mumzie you are correct this is a excellent course to take. I have been to 3 of the Ritger camps. Bob Rea is a great instructor!!. If you stay with the instruction you will improve no matter what your average is. I have used 5 step and 4 steps at these clinics. Bob does not try and change you. He will point out what he thinks will work best for you. My first year with him i was a 201 average bowler. Finished the year at 207 with a 299, and a 297 game, Plus multple 289's.(2001) Went back in 2002 because the 5 step was not working correctly.(had been using this for 10+ years.) We change it to 4 step which gave me better timing. Average stayed the same because of a leg injury. Attended again in in the first part of 2003 advanced class. Wow what a difference! Average went up to 214, 4 289 games, 1 300. Also the tips he gave for the last three strikes worked! It will be a good investment for all.

$425 for the four day clinic. Sounds expensive, but you are bowling for about 5 hours a day and getting coached, so it works out to about $20 per hour.

Resurrection.

I noticed that one of these camps (4 day) is coming to the lanes that are actually closest to my house.  I had considered this before but it would have required some driving and hotel costs.  I kind of heard mixed things, so decided the added expenses worked against it.

However, for this, I would not have added costs, just the program cost.  This has me wondering if anyone has any recent  experience with this clinic/camp and what the thoughts are.

Anybody?
