Triple elimination match play tourny...would
« on: April 12, 2004, 09:32:38 AM »
that be a format that would appeal for $20-25 an entry?  A triple elimination bracket tourny.  Basically, what I am referring to is a format that is basically bracket match play, if you win your first game, you continue on in the winners bracket, lose, you fall into the losers bracket.  If you lose in the loser bracket, you fall into a final loser bracket where if you lose, your out. The winners of the loser brackets get to go against the winner of the winners bracket, and it goes until all but 1 person has 3 losses (the winner of the tourny).

I haven't seen tourny's in this format, and thought it might add some more excitement, knowing you can still win the tourny if you have a bad game or two.

Might work, haven’t got the time right now to try and figure out just how it would work.

If you want to try something a little different, try this.

1.   You automatically advance if you beat your opponent.
2.   You also advance if you have a losing score over 200.
3.   Bye’s go to the highest winning score of the previous round.

This helps increase entries since everyone is sure they can shoot a measly 200.  It also helps in that you aren’t eliminated if the draw turns out bad for you in the first few rounds.

We eliminate rule 2 once we get into the cash positions.

You would be surprised how hard it is to shoot 200 when your opponent already has the match locked up.

It would be an all day tourny, if you end up going through one of the loser brackets, you could end up bowling 10-15+ games easily.

They key is not about the time, it's about making the tourny fun, and something people will want to do.  The whole idea would be to pit you against other good bowlers and clearly make it a battle of survival, and raising the comptetive juices of the bowlers who are in the 8th, 9th, 10th game of the day knowing their backs are against the wall, but they still have a legit mano-y-mano shot to win the thing.

Good point...however what made me wonder a bit, I am also into softball, and it is very common for teams to commit entire weekends Fri-Sunday night for a double maybe even triple elimination tournament.  Maybe bowlers are simply a different mind set.  Around here, I see 20-30 softball tournies a year, without prize money where you get 60 teams of 15 guys each to play in an all-weekend tourny, with teams from several different states.  If only there was a way to capture that dedication and comptetitiveness to our game.

I've bowled a tournament using a similar format about 3 years ago. It took like 6-7 hours to find a winner and in the neighborhood of 15 games to win it all.
There were probably 50 people at the start.
free agency it is until i get a better offer.   LMAO
