Is it possible to change the cover stock of a ball and make it extremely weak and use it on dry lane and it works...  Truth or Rumor....  I mean extremely weak without redrilling....

Something for when the heads and mids are toast....

dunk it in a bucket of lane oil and leave it there for a month.  Better yet, quit being cheap and buy a urethane ball for around 75 bucks.  My bad.  $54.99 for Ebonite Nitro at Sports Authority.

Sand it up in incremental steps:  600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000, 4000.  Then add polish on a ball spinner, lots of pressure and time.  Then add UFO.  That might help.

This is probably the best approach. A heavy dose of UFO (or preferably Control-It) after taking the ball progressively up to 4000 will neuter the cover beyond recognition.  :)


BTW, Urethane (even with a pancake block) on dry/dry is still going to hook, probably more than you'd like. For those handy with altering cover surfaces, there are better options.

Something for when the heads and mids are toast....

There's a limit to how much dry any ball can be made to handle. It depends on the ball's designed in strength and what you are able to do with it.

If you want to be able to handle dry lanes, start with a dry lanes ball.

There are further levels to which you can take a resin ball before applying polish and there are some extremely fine degrees of polish before you need to apply one with a slip agent in it.

But that's neither here nor there. See my post above.

I'm sure there are some drastic steps you can take...but in all honesty you will score better if you learn how to either play further left or use urethane if the pattern is shorter.

In my experience forcing resin to work when it's inappropriate leads to very poor carry.

I think you are correct, but he did not specify what type of ball so the answer could be either.

Since the way he phrased his question was both nebulous and potentially misleading, most of us replied with IFs, ANDs, or BUts. Balls that are weak can be made "extremely" weak. Balls that are not weak cannot be made "extremely" weak. You're better off using a ball for its intended purpose than trying to force it to be something it may not have the capability of being.

For me if i take a ball to 4000 and put polish then control it, it actually generally covers more boards than having more surface. These covers get into a roll so fast for me that the control it makes it longer and more continuous which means more boards covered for me. Of course on a weak ball that can change....

Are you sure you're applying Control-It according to the directions?
Or are you extremely rev dominant?
or are these balls drilled to flare a lot?

I ask because I am slightly rev dominant and when I apply Control-It, the ball can be very non-continuous, but then I bowl on some fairly dry conditions sometimes, and I tend not to drill my balls with a lot of flare. I don't think I have tried Control-It with a high flare drilling.

A ball with surface will sometimes burn up early and stop hooking on the backend. When you polish it it will skid and then hook strongly on the back.

Since all the hook is at once on the backend it appears that the ball hooks more and that type of hook is hard to control.

In general you can tame a ball down with surface prep and drilling but it is better to use balls designed for that condition as others have stated.
