Trying to chose...
« on: December 28, 2008, 09:20:31 AM »
I am looking for a new ball, but with 18 or so domestic ball companies I am having a hard time.

With each manufacturer having at least 10 models each,(not including spare and novelty bowling balls) how can I choose?

At rough count going through each on line catalog there are about 150 models of balls currently available, if you include recently discontinued, that number goes to almost 300 released in this past year.

I simply do not know what to buy. How do you actually choose?

I have thought of that! I am probably going by price, that eliminates a lot of the high end aggressive stuff. I bowl once a week in league with a few practice sessions with my friends over a beer and a snack. Nothing serious.

After coming back from a four year bowling vacation and recovering from ball whores anonymous I've started researching equipment based on my bowling style.

Since I generally have a high ball speed ranging from 16mph to 19mph depending on conditions, I don't match up with high RG and low DIF equipment very well.  I usually get over under reactions or those balls just never pick up a roll soon enough for me.  There are exceptions though.

I also don't match up with skid flip type of equipment either because of my speed and angle of rotation.  I generally look at rollier, low RG type of equipment and have had success with most choices.

I'd say take a look at what you're using now, try to decide which reaction shape you are looking for and research equipment that offers it.

It might not make a big difference to you but I don't match up with solid particles but find I prefer pearl particles due to the conditions I bowl on.  You can also research and compare your selections on coverstocks too.

There are a few video sites you can watch ball reactions while they might not be your style and what you'd expect you can get a good idea of what the ball will do.

Just my $.02

Talk to a coach/pro shop operator that knows your game and take suggestions from him.  Lots of info needed for that decision:

Type of player
What do you wan the ball to do
Gaps in your current arsenal

All of those a pro shop operator/coach will be able to help you with.

Speed Kills
When in doubt, move out
