Title: tucking the pinky..........why?
Post by: ecajberry on October 26, 2003, 03:43:25 PM
Last night I was doing ok, but totally lost it in the third game.
I was not able to find a line to work and tried everything. Remembered seeing the pros tuck their pinky, so I figured what the hell. Well I first tried it with the ball that doesn't work well on these sloppy wood lanes and got 2 strikes. The ball hooked more then normal, but didn't look or feel to have more revs on it. So then I tried it with the Icon and it made little difference. I was just plain fighting the shot all night and this morning my ball hand is very sore and stiff. I have come to decided that these wood lanes I bowl on just don't work for me and I have 20 +/- weeks of hell left.
After all this rambling I guess I would like to know what tucking the pinky does for a shot? In the mean time I think I will get myself a plastic ball and play straight down the middle and take what it gives me.

if you find that your spans are a bit short, and your like me n too cheap to get your spans re done for a measly little 2 parts of stuff all, , tuck your pinky, and it shortens the span of your hand, making it fit into your ball better. I did that when i was younger cause like every young kid i had 230 new balls and it would have cost me an arm and a leg to re grip them.

Good luck and high scoring

From Ron C's tip page, tip #11, Finger dancing:
http://www.bowl4fun.com/ron/roncarchive.htm

quote:
For our next trick let's try curling the little finger under and spread our index finger wide. To curl your little finger just bend it at the first joint so the ball will be next to the finger nail. This can be a little painful the first few times you try it. But most people don't have a problem with it after a while. Now when you roll your next ball it will tend to go longer
down the lane but come back strongly on the back end.  Some people have a hard time with this one with pain in the hand or fingers. If that happens to you then don't keep doing it.

This is the part that would concern me.  Your hand should not be sore.  Have your spans checked.  If they check out okay, are you squeezing the ball or trying to get lift on the ball?

I use to tuck my pinky in on every shot till someone pointed it out to me. So then I kept it out for stike shots, but when i go straight at spares, for some reason my pinky just goes straight to be tucking in. It works for me, and seems to help me come more straight out of the ball making it totally revless.

you tuck your pinky for more length. normally you do it if you're having trouble rolling up too early.
MI 2 AZ: When i've tried it in the past, it hurt quite a bit, because it puts so much loading on my ring finger. nowadays, I just pull my index finger up to where my fingertip only is touching the ball right next to the inserts rather than laying flat on the ball. It does basically the same thing but doesn't hurt my hand

Tucking your pinky gives you more leverage with your ring finger. Try it.  Put your hand in the ball without your pinky tucked. Then, with your hand still in the ball, slowly tuck your pinky, you'll feel the additional pressure or tension created from your ring finger.

Check out Ron Cliftons website.

I get a little more backend turn/drive
when I tuck my pinky.

Tucking the pinky does nothing for me other than "killing my ball". Also causes me to overturn the ball as well as chicken wing it. I've read Ron's "finger dancing" and it doesn't work for me. I get more revs, a better release, more hook, and a livelier ball with my pinky untucked.
