After 23 years of bowling I finally see some success
« on: April 23, 2013, 11:14:48 AM »
Okay I don't normally post up stuff like this. Earlier this year I had a nasty slump going on. So I worked with a new style and that has led me to much more consistency. 4-5 weeks ago I started out the night with a 298. 1st honor award ever with the 11-in-a-row award. Then shot the next 6 in the 2nd game before I started losing the lanes. I managed to shoot a decent 3rd game for my 1st 700 set in over 2 years. I was happy but the next couple of weeks I struggled a bit scoring at just under average.

On the final night of leagues bowling started out normal with a 206. I made a small line change and off to the races, 2nd game shot 299. Ran the 1st 7 in game 3. Managed to save the game for a 244.

All shot with an IQ Tour Pearl.

that's great and a good lesson for those who are afraid to make changes to their game.  It's hard to committ to making changes to your game that are going to lower your average for a period of time until you have them encorporated but if you do the upside can be huge.

Mike,

Sounds great.

I believe you were working on a hinge!  Is that part of the improvement?

You would be correct. I changed my form from the traditional push-a-way to hinge and it feels to be the best and right change I could have ever done. So most of the credit can be given to that major yet single change, the other credit is given to the hard work I put in during that game change. I bowled 20-30 games a week for 5 weeks straight working on nothing but the hinge and timing. I saw almost instant improvements just messing with the new form.

My message to anyone out there, Do not be scared to change something in your form. If the new change doesn't feel right or isn't showing results either get outside advice or try something else but I suggest anyone who's looking to change something, start with your timing.

nice bowling, great to see your hard work paid off.  i'll pass on the best piece of advice i have gotton in my bowling life.  always move half a board right (if right handed) on the 12 shot when on the front 11.

Mike  I do have one question regarding your change to the hinge.  Are you dropping the ball into the swing by unfolding the elbow (i.e Jason Sterner). Holding the ball in close to the body and pushing out until the elbow meets the hip and then dropping it into the swing (Mo Pinel's "sliding Hinge).  Or lastly more of a pushing down hinge? I have been working to incorporate the hinge into my game this year as well but have had trouble just letting the ball fall into the swing without some sort of forward movement. It has been tough to stay committed as my average has fallen form 220-210 in the past 3 months much to the chagrin of my teamates who want me to "go back to how you were bowling"

It took me a few weeks to figure out where I needed the start the drop into the back swing, once I found the area everything became effortless. 3 games suddenly felt more like just 1 game.

I don't do a sliding hinge, I start out with the elbow tucked into my right side take my 1st step with my right foot, just before I start my 2nd step the ball starts the hinge motion and the rest will fall into place.
