« on: October 26, 2005, 10:21:36 AM »
just wondering if there's any way to change the color of the logos on your ball...say i have orange logo's..and want them to be white...i know i can remove the color...but what kind of material would i use to fill the engravings back in? is it possible to do it, and make it last? lmk if you've done it before. thanks.

I have used oil paints, artists paint. It lasts about a month or longer, but not permanent

Yeah, "pimp my balls" really works and is easy with the right material.

Firstly, logo change depends on the ball. Brunswick balls are difficult, because logo and typo are actively baked into the coverstock. Other balls with an engraving that is filled with paint (e. g. Storm, Ebonte, Hammer) are easy to adjust. You can use acryllic paint or enamel paint (Matte or glossy, just a matter of taste) used for model kits. Oil paint can also be an option, because it remains flexible. It just needs very long to dry up.

You can either lay out the curent engraving with the new paint over the old (simply with a fine brush, wipe off any extra fresh paint on the coverstock with a cotton cloth or tissues), or scratch out the old paint beforehand. An electric mini drill comes in handy for this. This device might also be the only option for Brunswick balls, but I do not recommend it. It will look awful.

Giving a matte white primer layer into the engraving before you add light paints like yellow, red or flourescent colours improves adhesion and brightness. It is an extra step, but worth the results.

I revamped my Blade Particle, exchanging its former light yellow engraving with a light blue and white one, a TPC Shooter with a new florescent green engraving and an X-Factor RE-Loaded which received new flourescent orange and yellow engravings (the latter 2 look cool in black light!). I also refreshed the white engravings on some other used balls. No problem so far, and definitely improves looks.

M,

We used to do this all the time in the pro shop during slow times.  We actually used a tack to get out the old coloring, and filled in the logos with new colors.  Sometimes even a combination of colors in the logos.  The best ones were the old Hammers.  The coloring came out very easily.  You would have to ask your pro shop for a crayon to fill in the logos.  It is a soft type of wax crayon.

Depends on the type of ball you use... and I would not use crayon to fill engravings. Color effect will be great, but it will come off as easy as you paste it into the engravings. There is no good adherence to the ball surface as a true color coating will have.

Personally, I would not recommend changing engravings on balls which have their logos etc. "baked" into the coverstock, like Brunswick or MoRich do. You can get it out with a mini drill, but it will look awful.

Other balls with real engravings like Ebonite, Hammer or Storm are easier to handle. You can either scratch the old paint out, using a tack, steel needle or something similar, or do it professionally with a mini drill and matching milling heads (you get good, cheap ones in DIY markets). Just be careful to stay in the engravings.

For filling, I'd recommend glossy water-based acryllic paint. From my experiences with some balls (a TPC Player which has now Storm-style yellw-ornage-red engravings all over, a TPC Shooter with new neon green engravings and a Blade Particle which received all new white/light blue engravings - sorry, I do not have webspace for posting pictures!), this is the easiest to handle material and has the best long-term persistence and dirt resistance. You will not need any chemicals to clean up the brush, and it will not stink like a nitro based coating which will tend to be sticky - as well as oil paint, which can do a good job, too, but it stays very soft and will get ugly soon.

Two coatings ensure brightness, when you use light colours like yellow, make sure to have a layer of white (best matte for improved binding with the coverstock) below.

Use a good hobby painter brush, I recommend investing some bucks into a brush with mink hair - it has the best tip for exact working.

Excessive paint can dry up and be rubbed off with a soft cotton cloth without chemicals etc..

Good luck. It is worth a try and can give an old ball truely good looks.
