Turbo Switch Grip reliability

Hello everyone.  I wanted to ask this question about Turbo Switch Grips.  I am thinking about trying Switch grips because I know you can get a switch grip insert with no slug so I can epoxy my 1 1/4" thumb mold into it and then get the beauty of my thumb mold, but in a interchangeable thumb.  I was just wondering how the new generation of Switch Grips hold up and how strong are they compared to when they first came out.  Plus I was wondering if you can feel and/or hear a definite "click" when you lock the insert in.  I've fallen in love with being able to replicate my favorite thumb, but would like the interchangeable ability as well.

Any input would be appreciated.

I have not been able to break a third generation and the new D models look even harder to break. If you use a really tight thumbhole and throw the ball hard you have a better chance of breaking one. I have taken the slug out of an old broken 2 gen and put into the new D model sleeve and it works really well.

I have never been able to break one, even a first gen. one. I bowled with them since my local pro shop was introduced to them. I was a tournament and i needed one opened up and the pro shop drilled straight through the whole thumb and wreck the tabs on the bottom, i threw with it during the day, being cautious and still it never broke and never came out. I read up on the Turbo Switch Grips, guess to break the tabs on a 3rd gen. thumb you would have to throw it almost 40mph.

Q1- I have never had one break on me. I have seen a couple come out when the bowler did not completely turn the grip into the sleeve. In both cases they were changing balls mid frame and were rushing.That was with the first gen years ago.

Q2- They do not "click" on gen 1-3 but simply stop turning. I have not used the D model so I can''t comment on that one. In your case, since you use a mold, you would know immediately, by the feel, if you didn''t turn it completely in.

Update.. I reread the newest installation instructions from Turbo and it states you will hear a "click" when the sleeve is fully seated.

the new ones are great
I have them in all my stuff right now
the newest ones you will hear a slight click when it locks into place
highly recommend them

and they are great for using your thumb mold installed in 1 of their pieces
a lot of guys by me do that

my friend has his mold in the vise ITs. i think what they did was take the smaller slug and do the mold. and then drill out a bigger slug and put the smaller slug with the mold into it. and drill the hole for the outer sleeve for the big slug. its a little bit extra work but worth it.

If you have a custom thumb mould that you're happy with, then why would you have a switchgrip too?

If you adjust tape a lot because your thumb changes sizes all the time (like me), it's nice to be able to use the same tape configuration on the same thumbhole in every ball.  That's the big advantage to an interchangeable thumb!

I have been using the new Switch grips since they came out and I haven't had any problems with the newest generation. And my ball driller loves the ease of installation as well. He can punch out a new ball in 5 minutes.
