Black Tape
« on: July 03, 2009, 05:47:00 PM »
Do some brands make their black tape really thin and others make their's just like white tape?  I'm pretty sure it was Ebonite's that I've seen come thicker and rigid, does everyone else make their's really thin and flexible?

If your looking for black tape that is like the tape we used when Bowler's Tape first came out then buy Brunswick. I do not like the thicker stuff and the AMF - Bowler's tape now leaves a lot of residue behind. Brunswick black tape is the tape we all remember. END OF STORY! Valentino Franken tape is good stuff but very thin. It is not designed to make the hole smaller. It is more for making sure you get a clean release.

I have a lot of problem with my thumb changing sizes as well as it also being sort of a wet thumb at times. There are times my thumb hole may be a bit loose and a piece of white tape makes it on the borderline of being a wee bit tight but not exactly tight so I don't remove that piece of white tape, but simply put a piece of Franken tape over that piece of white tape and it has the exact right slickness to allow my thumb to come out of the ball without hanging up. Thus a tighter hole but still able to come out of thumb hole smoothly. The Franken tape is so thin that it doesn't tighten the hole in a case like this plus it is slicker than other black tapes. Also doesn't leave the sticky goo in the thumb hole but still adhears extremely well.

Brick, so you put the Franken Tape in front on top of the white?  I would think it works better on the back side but if the texture from the white is going to make you hang then covering up with the smooth tape might be the way to go.

Just my opinion, but I do not like Ebonite black tape--too thick and difficult
to work with as it is not flexible.

I use the black tape in the back of the hole over the white tape, never the front. For example, I always put a piece of white tape in the front of the thumb hole for gripping purposes. If the hole is still a bit loose, I put another piece of white tape in the back of the thumb hole. Now if it is on the border line of being tight, I put a piece of Franken tape over that piece of tape in the back of the hole.

nextbowler, do you use another brand of black tape, or do you not use it at all?

Brick, that makes sense.  Since my thumb changes size while I bowl, I would want to put a certain amount of white in back and put the black tape over it. That way I won't have to switch out the black just to put more white under it, and also to keep the amount I use in front under control.

For example, I always like one white in front for feel, but that's not usually enough tape to fit my thumb.  My thumb shrinks as I bowl, from most swollen to smallest, is probably about 2 or 3 pieces of white tape.  Let's say I start most swollen and need two pieces, I would put one in front, one in back plus thin black tape.  Then I'd just add tape to the front as needed, typically that might only be a piece or two, totalling three in front max using this method.

I think that'd be a good way of doing it, don't you?

Strike, I have the same problem as you about my thumb shrinking as I bowl.

What I like about Franken Tape in addition to it's being so thin and slick and adhearing extremely well and easy to remove is some times after putting some over the white in the back of my thumb hole is that if I need to add another piece of white as time goes on, I can remove the Franken tape with my knife, add a piece of white and put the same piece of Franken Tape back in the hole and it still adhears well.

I've always used electricial tape. It's cheap, can be cut to size, and goes in and out easily.Prefer Master white for the front of the hole.

I never really noticed much untill I recently got the Ebonite.  I have used
Master and Brunswick tape.

Have you tried Scotch 33+ tape? It is more expensive than the normal 1700 tape, but has a much better adhesive.

I'll check it out.
Thanks for the tip.
