Two Handed
« on: August 21, 2009, 01:22:21 AM »
I tried this for the first time ever last night.  I have a friend who broke his thumb last year and did it for a few weeks before an auto accident KO'd him for the rest of the year.  I've seen some videos of the two handed players and wanted to at least see if I could do it at all.

My footwork was more standard than the "skipping" that Belmonte and others seem to do.  It felt a little awkward, but nothing I couldn't improve with a little practice.  I bet I came pretty close to doubling my rev rate.  Most times I'm around 300, but I would guess I was 450+ two handed.  The ball would practically go sideways at the break point.  Standing a little left of the left gutter out to around 5 past the second set of range markers to nose or Brooklyn.  It would take considerable work to get consistent or accurate, but I can definitely see why some people do this.  I had already finished league and my wrist was already a little tender (arthritis for those who don't already know - I wear a Robby's Revs normally).  The two handed no thumb release didn't seem to bother my wrist any appreciable amount.

I doubt I'd try to do this full time, but I might try it from time to time in practice to see if I improve with it.  How many others have tried it and what were your results?  Does anyone feel like they could make the switch and stay within 10-20 pins of their average two handed?  If I were to try it more seriously, I think I'd get something 14# for some more ball speed and add some surface to even out the snap I was seeing.

I had to try 2 handed due to injuries.   I actually found not only was I w/in 10-20 pins of my average, but I bowled at average.   I have gone back to one handed for this season, but when I sub I will be establishing with 2 hands to get better at it.   Everytime I bowl 1 handed it hurts my fingers due to tendon/ligament pull I had last January after 2 weeks off from bowling.     2 handed is pain free with more revs and power.  On a house shot, I can sacrifice accuracy for power.

i do it when my thumb tears open on occasions and am quite good at it. i studied a few articles about it and i can create half decent speed with it (around 2 mph lower than my speed when im going fast). creates a ton of power i came up half pocket and it was a little more than controlled explosion

Hey there Strider,

I had no idea two handed bowling would be such a big topic in this forum, but since I've joined, seems like there is definitely a mass interest in it.  Yeah, first off, definitely don't expect to make the switch and automatically come out of the blocks firing, it will definitely take some hours and games of practice, so don't get frusterated getting started.

I was a pretty solid one handed bowler, avg. right around 200 never above 210, just couldn't peak that breakthrough to take it to the next level.  Was playing with the two handed style for over 15 years and kind of used it as a B game for deep inside cause I never could put enough hand into it one handed.  Once I committed to making the change after a great outing at Nationals 4 years ago, I practiced like a madman to get through the learning curve of incorporating this new A game.  It has since improved my avg. to over 230 and definitely has gotten me through that breakthrough.

Most of your speed will come from your timing and momentum from your legs, not so much from a lighter ball although you will be able to sling it harder, but then you'll be sacrificing being comfortable with your current weight and tend to put less into the ball.  Stick with a ball weight you are comfortable with not so much with how fast you think you can get it down the lane.

Hope this helps a little bit.
