A drilling WTF? thing
« on: December 16, 2010, 02:05:02 PM »
OK, I have spent LOTS of time and effort learning the intricacies of modern ball drillings.

Learned what paps are for, learning about pin placements and the effects of mass bias placements. Learned about the degree technique, the clock technique, and the dual angle technique.

Then this happens and makes me question whether it means anyting or not.

Tonight, a member of my team who likes to experiment, comes in with a "new" ball. It is actually a used ball (Mo-Rich Lev-RG RESPONSE) that is already drilled. My friend knows SQUAT about ball tech or drilling tech, and is amazed when I tell him that the ball is set up in what appears to be a pretty strong pattern FOR A LEFTY. My friend is a RIGHT HANDED STROKER.  It is very close to a stacked double thumb drilling for a lefty, which is going to put the pin, MB, and x-hole right in his track. He just says "lets see what happens".

He then shoots 246-278-209/733, about 190 pins OVER his average. HUH?

Ball acted nice, and he was able to play right up the track, getting a smallish flip right in front of the rack, and carrying the world.

Really makes me wonder just exactly how much all this technical drilling stuff is even relevant to most house bowlers.

Juggernaut, ever heard of dumb luck? It happens. Also, maybe this is the kind of "trick" layout that should work for this particular bowler on those lanes, but because it's so radical compared to the norm for most drillers and bowlers, he's never had a ball laid out like that before. (95% of people think you shouldn't ever put anything on the negative side of the bowler's center of grip just because it looks like it shouldn't work.)

And again, it's a house shot. The entire purpose of the house shot is to make it where you can do pretty much anything and still get to the pocket. The layout used makes infinitely more difference on a sport shot or something where there isn't free hook outside and tons of hold inside.

Yes, I've heard of it. Seems like this may be the serendipitous situation you are describing. I honestly don't think anyone would've purposefully laid out a ball for this bowler like this, but he made it look really good. I'm going to watch and see if it continues, and only time will tell, but he sure made it look like gold last week.

Duly noted. Thing is, as rolly as this turned out to be, it seems that it should've rolled out when thrown wide into the dry, but it didn't. It did start its move earlier, but still made it back and carried well.

 We'll see.

Also, what's kind of funny is that I was talking with a friend about layout ideas for a ball he wants to drill after Christmas, and since he's a high rev guy and sometimes needs a ball to get good length but not be overly flippy, I had suggested trying something really different like a 6x6 layout, which for his PAP would put the pin and mass bias left of the fingers and thumb, almost like the kind of ball you're talking about for this guy. Who knows, maybe it'll work great for him too.
