Two Hander Grip help please
« on: October 04, 2016, 12:52:41 PM »
Hello bowling family,
I am having an issue. I am a two hander (new bowler). When I release my ball I seem to always lose it. I am trying to figure out is it my grip? I have finger grips on all my balls and my two fingers are relaxed all away threw the process (like the thumb on a person who bowls with three fingers). Am I suppose to grip the ball with my two fingers or keep them relaxed? Thank you for your time and comments.

if your just beginning it may be easier to use a house ball and put your hands under the ball and not in the finger grips to practice your wrist motion.
Will expand arsenal after I polish my spares.

If you can "grip" with the fingers without squeezing it, that would be optimal.  As a one handed bowler, I bowl with my fingers very relaxed, typically because relaxed fingers enables me to get less action on the ball and a more controllable shot, but without your thumb in the ball to balance the ball on your hand and to kinda guide the ball  towards your target you might want to work on gripping without squeezing...or you may need to have a driller recheck your fingers and the fit/grips because the better the fit, the easier it will be to hold onto the ball with the fingers without over squeezing.

I'd suggest you find a qualified coach who understands the two hand game. Also, without any video of you bowling, these guys on here are limited to what they can advice.

As someone who dabbled with the two-handed game a few years back and who still bowls no-thumb as a B-game, I have some experience here. If I understand what you're saying correctly, it sounds like you're losing the ball during the backswing or forward swing, correct?

If so, this often has more to do with hand positioning and the swing itself than it has to do with fit. After all, if your fingers are the only part of your hand in the ball, you really aren't going to be doing much actual gripping.

As such, your setup has a lot of importance here. As a two-hander, you really need to experiment with where you put your off (non-gripping) hand on the ball because that will influence your feel and ability to feel like the ball is secure on the way back and during the downswing.  I'm going to link to a page that has some videos of Jason Belmonte working with me on various aspects of two-handed bowling. The second video from the bottom provides some tips on hand positioning.

Another aspect of this is where your bowling elbow is going. If the elbow starts flying around, it can make it very easy to lose the ball on the way back or to get all out of whack on the way back through. In time, I found that I couldn't push the ball down the way that Belmonte does. I had to try to keep my right arm almost totally straight on the way back and through; that was because I didn't have nearly enough flexibility to keep both hands on the ball straight behind me like he did. The same can be said of Jesper Svennson.

His arms are long, and he's very flexible, so he can keep both hands firmly on the bowling ball when his swing gets behind him. If you can't do that, and many can't, you'll have to figure out ways of keeping the ball secure. I just don't think that the grips necessarily have a whole lot to do with it.

Hey, here is a video of me throwing and it feels like it's getting away. It looks like I cuff the ball once I go into the back swing and into the forward swing. I did get a lesson but of course the coach really didn't know anything about two handers. Here is the vid. Thanks again for all the help. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NViYdjTi6VQ&feature=youtu.be
