Tried skin tape for the first time tonight.
« on: October 02, 2016, 10:26:40 PM »
I bought some on a whim when I was at my pro shop a few months ago and never gave it a try. Lately I have had issues trying to get out of the ball quickly and cleanly, causing me to pull my shots to the inside, and ez slide just isn't consistent shot to shot for me. I thought what the hell and pulled out a piece of the black Brunswick tape. ISSUE SOLVED! Quick and clean thumb exit. Possibly slightly higher revs which may not be a good thing, but I was on my mark pretty accurately the rest of the night so I could adjust to that. I can see why the stuff is so popular now

I just ordered a pack of the black off of amazon. 40 precut pieces for like $14. Not too bad. I always thought it was just a gimmick or something, but the trial pack my pro shop put together was too good to pass up. Glad I did now

It allows you to knuckle and still get out relatively well.  Not saying you (OP) are but this is also a band-aid for some especially those that bowl with loose thumbs or incorrect fitting.

More details please... Is this the tape Brunswick calls Armor Skin? Was it put on the back of the hole or on the thumb? Any comparisons to Hada #1 (what I currently use, but not totally committed to...)
Thanks

I was just remeasured a short while ago by one of the best pro shop drillers there is. I have total faith in his measurements, so I am sure fit is fine. Thumb may be a little loose, but not by much. I think I will hang up if it is any tighter. I don't feel like I knuckle the ball, but I still can a little even though I was really working on not doing that a while ago.
I think it is the skin armor tape and it does stick to the back of my thumb, although "stick"  is a term used loosely. I had to take it back off and reposition it after I stuck it on the first time and I had already used ez slide. If it wasn't for those two things,  I think it would have stuck a lot better

Possum, I use several thumb tapes for fitting. Vise Hada Patch blue is pretty thin and provides a tweak if I need a little extra snug feeling. I think that Masters green tape is the thickest for the back of the thumb, so I will use Master green if I need more tightening. You can layer tape on the back of your thumb just like you layer tape inside the thumb hole.

Vise and Masters have excellent adhesion. Yes, Vise leaves a residue on your thumb--a trade off that I gladly accept.

Pete,

The problem with the using thicker tape is that the thicker tape has more friction on the outside; so it produces a slower thumb exit, all other things being equal.

Personally, I prefer to stick with one thickness of thumb tape (and of course, its own degree of friction) and adjust the thumb hole with white (and/or black) thumb-hole tape.

I use the tape on the thumb for 2 purposes; one, to prevent blisters, and two, to encourage a quicker thumb release. I need it to help prevent blisters because the skin on my thumb is fairly loose and my skin often sticks to urethane thumb sleeves I use. I don't knuckle the ball, unless my thumb has shrunken during bowling and I don't yet feel it. Also involved in this sequence is the fact that my thumb swells and shrinks a lot regularly, with the weather and with different foods. So thumb tape has been a great help to me.

Hi, Jeff! I have been fortunate that my thumb does not blister, but my thumb does compress and shrink---sometimes a lot during a series. As you note, thumb size depends on several factors including the time of day when you bowl. I like a pretty snug fit and have tried a number of different tapes inside the thumb hole. I did not have a good reaction to the white textured tape which did not give me a clean release.

The thicker tape is more coarse and can cause a slower release, but the texture of the tape has not been an issue for me. I use the tape mainly for the fit.

I use thumb tape because I get sticky thumbs when I'm hot (either during warm weather or while sweating, like during bowling), and I can't get a consistent thumb release if my thumb is sticky. I prefer a quick release so I have using the blue Vise Hada tape for a few years now, though I recently tried - and really liked - the black Motiv Hada tape.

If the texture of the white tape is an issue, you can always layer a piece of the smooth black over the white. Most blacks are much smoother than all whites.

I have found the Valentino Frankentape is really thin and works well for me on top of the white tape.  I can remove it and reuse it two or three times with no problems (like when I have to remove or add a piece of the white tape, I can use the same piece of Frankentape).
