Front 8 in row, heart was beating out of control
« on: February 14, 2010, 09:16:48 PM »
Hi, had front 8 tonight, heart was literally pumping thorugh my shirt. I tried to stay focused and relaxed, but when u are waiting for your turn (which felt like an ice age)it made it worse, it seemed like forever... Its kinda like sexual performace anxiety!!!!! I haven't had a 300 yet, anyone else exp this, I might just have blown it, although finished 268 still.

The pressure that I felt, how do u guys handle this?? Seriously, cause I'm improving as a bowler, and really want to know?? I understand take it shot by shot, but seriosuly, I was on the 9th and could feel heart pumping...

Love your take on this

I know this sounds over simplified, but it isn't. If you have the front eight, what you are doing is working, so just go and do it again, one frame at a time.

Add to this one other thing.  I was a pitcher and came close to a couple no hitters in high school having thrown 2 1 hitters.  I am not a firm believer of concentrating that much more on what's going on....because I find that I tend to think too much and eventually think myself out of what's been working well.

Sunday when I threw that 300, I was bowling with my son and another father/son combo on our team (father and his other son were the ones I threw my last 300 against....that was funny!!).  But his son didn't want to talk to me because he didn't want to jinx me.  See.....I don't believe in that...I believe in keeping the mind and the body loose.

Last year I had the first 9 and the bowler in front of me took forever and it got into my head and I of course threw a bad shot but picked up the spare and struck on the next ball. I had sweat dripping from my fingers. Just crazy. But this year I got my first 300 and right after I threw the last ball, it struck and I started sweating again.

It's not an easy thing for some people I remember my 1st 300 felt the same way you did then I got my 2nd 3rd and so on and it became easier to control emotions. We seem to talk about everything but bowling most of the time we are on the lanes, baseball football whats in the news etc we have a few (more like alot) of beers and just do our thing. I bowl on some pretty good teams and was a member of the ABC 5 man team record of 3905 in 2001 when you talk about pressure that night pops into my head instantly, I knew I need the first 2 in the tenth for the 1st 3900 ever bowled never felt more pressure in my life I remember it like it happened last night.

One trick I learned is starting at strike one thinking about the 300. If its always in your mind you get used to it and stop freaking out.

Blame it on your teammates.  My teammates know that once I have 7-8 in a row that its their job to distract me in between shots by either talking to me about sports.  The funny part is I know when they are doing it to distract me, but its worked so far in keeping me unfrazzled.

oddly enough having that many strikes in a row doesn't scare me. when i had my 300 i figured nah no way will i ever get a 300. that kept me calm till 11th shot when i woke up and then realized gee i could have a 300 GAME. granted the last 2 shots my knees were knocking like a woodpecker.

I've bowl only one 300 game, and I didn't even know what I had until the last shot, it wasn't that I wasn't looking at my score, for some reason it never registered until I was waiting for the ball to come back and I looked up and boy did it register, I threw the ball and prayed they all carried, they didn't.  To this day the most I can throw in a row is 8.

This and preshot routine go hand in hand. If you dont have one it will make those last shots harder to NOT focus on.
about 2 months ago I had first eleven, old man next to me jumps up. To make matters worse he is very slow and deliberate. I laughed it off to the others watching, stepped off, grabbed the drysac, wiped the ball off and stepped up again....300. He and I laughed about it afterwards though.

When i shot the front 8 I was bowling my last game in a 3 game set, I needed something like a 210 or something for a 600 series, so I wanted that as a target, but the strikes kept happening, it was in the 9th frame, where I seriously thought of the possibility of the 300.. Then I fell apart lol..heart, blood pressure, I tried to focus but could not, I was so lame..

Need to have a emergency gameplan should I ever be in that same situation again. Go for a walk, watch other bowlers, have a chat, anything..

Love reading your thoughts guys and for making my post a great read..I'm sure for every bowler who shoots a 300 on this forum, there must be many more who have yet to do so, so hopefully they can too learn a few tips, cause I'm sure some of the suggestions will prepair me better for my next front 8..

I remember when having the front six would give me a nervous breakdown. As you progress and get more of those situations under your belt, you will feel more and more comfortable in that situation. For me, it's now around the front nine before I even consider a 300. Despite not having that many 3's, I've never missed the the pocket on the 12th shot. 4 carried, and 2 left a solid nine pin.

My advice would be: don't take too much extra time to think about it before you bowl. Get up there, go through your pre-shot routine, and do what you have done for the last x number shots. Too much thinking will get you in trouble. I like to walk around a bit to get away from the pressure also.
